Willow has a really strong foundation and we’ve been working together for almost a year but we’ve been focusing on these things recently:
- clarifying boundaries around drive and arousal
- frustration tolerance around handling
- taking mouthing/using teeth off the table for when she feels the need to control the situation
This last one is tricky because she does have the right to express her feelings and we don’t need to practice overriding her boundaries often. What she does need is a stronger foundation of trust in relationships and resilience around stress and frustration. The goal is not fully cooperative care, I don’t believe that’s always the most practical route.
So instead we build up her impulse control, commitment to play with distractions and competing motivators, and ability to take on feedback and clarify communication.
I think of this like making deposits and withdrawals from the bank. If we havent made enough deposits with for the relationship into the bank and we try and make a big withdrawal and trim all her nails we either gotta pay it back asap with a big deposit or take the time to rebuild before we try again.
This is why before I clarify the criteria of “all done” or the end of play, I make sure we’ve played at least enough for her to feel somewhat satisfied and practiced other enforceable cues during the play session. I let her chase the toy before I ask her to not chase the paper, cause she has to chase not matter what.

She was abandoned as a young puppy and spent the first 6months of her life in a shelter before being adopted. Wren is scared of everything around her, noises, cars, the wind, strangers, you name it.
Her 1st instinct is flight, to run away.
My goal early on here with Wren is to build her confidence out in the world, to have her feel like the "predator" instead of the "prey"
I'm doing that by trying to get her to play and to have some freedom.
Turns out, she loves to chase a ball!
This was from our 2nd session together recently and as you can see, she's a total ham.
More to come with this girl, but she's already making such great progress.

Lure coursing is an instinct-based sport where dogs chase a plastic “prey” lure across a field. It was originally developed for sighthounds, but dogs of all breeds and mixes can participate.
It’s an amazing outlet that provides both mental stimulation and physical exercise, while allowing dogs to tap into their natural chasing instincts in a safe, structured way.
