Note: It is illegal to interfere with wild bird nests without good cause, and it's easy to cause more harm than good, so only do so under guidance from someone who knows what they're doing.
We observed two dedicated great tit parents visiting this nest with food for their nestlings continuously on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. But when we didn't spot the parents on Thursday, we sought advice from a wildlife rescue centre and emergency vets. In the end, we kept them in our care overnight and fed them until a volunteer could transport them to properly knowledgeable caregivers in a wildlife rescue centre an hour away.

Children spend their days playing in nature, exploring the wider community, engaging in project work, being creative, and being supported by adults who love and respect them, and who view them as powerful learners and active citizens.

I have the unusual privilege and joy of working at all levels in the sector:
• In the Garden I'm very much in a child-facing role: playing, teaching, care-giving and everything that's part of early education.
• I work across Bristol, the region and sometimes nationally in early years systems leadership. I do this with Bristol Early Years and the teaching hub; representing Millies Garden in the Bristol & Beyond Stronger Practice Hub; with; and as a freelance speaker, trainer and consultant.
• While I complete an MA Education degree at the Centre for Research in Early Childhood, I'm also developing my academic identity, including engaging with and generating research.
• And most recently, I've been working as a school governor at my local primary school, supporting their strategic/leadership work and learning lots about what comes after Early Years.
With three daughters, a big garden to manage, lots of chickens and more professional roles than I can count, my life is certainly busy and exciting!
Driving me is a soul-deep commitment to social and environmental justice, which I see as entangled issues that can be addressed through education, starting with our youngest learners.
My time working in early years has taught me there's no point in waiting for change to come from above. System change will start in the many diverse, vibrant grassroots projects like the Garden. I've been inspired by what Peter Moss calls the 'resistance movement' and how the work we do builds a safer, fairer, healthier world from the ground up.
When I'm not working (and I'm mostly working!) you'll find me reading books, gardening, taking photos, making jam, hanging out with my daughters, drinking wine with my favourite adults, chatting politics, and trying to dismantle patriarchy, topple capitalism and break-free from the neoliberal hell era we're living through 🙃
Given my work and training background, I've got really high expectations for my own children's education (😅). In all honesty, a few years ago I had given up on finding my 'dream school' for my own children to attend: a school that truly realised the child's need for warm relationships, emotional health and lots of outdoor play; but simultaneously a school that served a diverse, local community like ours, rather than the most privileged few. I will never forget first meeting the school leaders and instantly feeling their authentic human values in everything that was happening there!
Over the past few years, it has been such a joy and a privilege to work more closely with this gem of a school and support them in their uniquely values-driven work.
I have loved supporting them so that children who move on from Millie's Garden to our local school will get a lot of continuity - its an amazing feeling to send Garden graduates there and know they will continue to have plenty of wild outdoor play, build on skills they began with us (like creative woodworking) and be supported by the most incredible adults. But I've also learnt SO much from them in return, and been given a good dose of faith in the possibilities of our mainstream education system when it's in the right hands.
