We almost said no to the pool in Hawaii because it was over our BAH. 🏤

For years, we’d always found housing under our BAH limit. Pocket the difference. Keep the savings rate high. That was the system.

Then we got orders to Hawaii.

Everything under our BAH was fine. Everything above it was exactly where we wanted to be.

Pool. Close to the beach. A couple of hundred dollars over BAH.

We took it. Dialed the savings rate from 40% to 30%. Still hit Financial Independence.

The lesson: a high savings rate is a tool. Not a life sentence.

You’re only stationed in Hawaii once. Act like it.

This is Step 9 of our 10-part series on building wealth in the military — build the life you want and save for it.

Want to sign up for a credit card with a sign-up bonus, but don’t know how it works?

Let’s break it down and see why active duty military should be paying attention.

Step 1: Apply for a rewards card with a sign-up bonus.
For active duty, the annual fee is waived. That’s $95 to $550+ back in your pocket before you even swipe the card.

Step 2: Hit the minimum spend using purchases you’re already making.
Groceries. Dining. Gas. Utilities. You’re already spending this money every month. Put it on the right card and let it work for you.

Step 3: Unlock your sign-up bonus
Depending on the card, that’s anywhere from $500 to $900+ in travel — or straight cash back. Just from hitting a spending threshold you were going to hit anyway.

And that’s just the bonus.

Stack that with:
✅ $0 annual fee for active duty
✅ Bonus points on dining, travel, and everyday spending
✅ Trip cancellation and delay protection
✅ Primary rental car insurance
✅ No foreign transaction fees — perfect for OCONUS duty stations and travel
✅ Lounge access at airports worldwide

Keep the points for travel. Cash them out. Transfer them to an airline or hotel partner. The choice is yours.

Same spending. Way better return.

Comment “CARD” and we’ll send you the full breakdown, including the exact cards we recommend for active duty military. 👇
Financial independence isn’t about never working again. It’s about never having to. 👇

That’s the difference most people miss.

It’s not about sitting on a beach sipping mai tais for the rest of your life. It’s about having the option to say no to a bad boss, take a month off between jobs, start a business, spend time with your family, or just breathe.

58% of people retire sooner than they planned — because of illness, job loss, or unhappiness. Most of them weren’t ready.

Financial independence means you are.

And in the military you have an enormous head start. Low-tax pay. TSP match. Pension. VA benefits. Deployment income with almost zero expenses.

Don’t leave the military less rich than you were when you entered.

This is Step 10 of our 10-part series on building wealth in the military and it’s out now on the Military Money Manual podcast. Link in bio to listen. 🎙️

PCS season is here and most military families leave thousands of dollars on the table by letting the government handle their move. 📦

A DITY move (PPM) means you move yourself and get paid what the government would have paid a contractor. Move for less and keep the difference tax-free.

Happy Military Spouse Appreciation Day 🇺🇸

Today, we recognize the people who hold everything together while their service member serves.

The ones who pack up the house, find a new school for the kids, figure out the new BAH, set up the utilities, and make a strange city feel like home…over and over again.

The ones who keep the emergency fund intact, the bills paid, and the financial plan moving, even when their spouse is unreachable for weeks.

The ones who put their own careers on hold, rebuild their professional lives at every new duty station, and do it all without complaint.

Military spouses don’t just support this life. They make it possible.

If you’re a military spouse, we see you.

PCS season is here. And military families are losing thousands on every move. 📦

Not because the money isn’t there.

Because nobody told them what to watch out for.

Here are the 5 mistakes costing military families the most this summer:

1️⃣ Not budgeting for hidden move-in costs: first month, last month, security deposit, pet fees, parking. It all hits before your first paycheck at the new station.

2️⃣ Skipping the PPM math: in 2026 the military will pay 100% of what the government would have paid a contractor. If you move for less, you get to keep the difference.

3️⃣ Not saving receipts and filing in time: gas, lodging, and meals. For a family of four, that adds up fast. Make sure to get reimbursed for what you are entitled to.

4️⃣ No cash buffer for the unexpected: damaged goods, delayed shipment, or the car breaks down halfway there. Something always comes up. Have $1,500–$3,000 set aside specifically for the move.

5️⃣ Going over the weight limit: bikes, furniture, strollers, baby gear, years of toys. Take time to declutter and sell items before moving day arrives. Be mindful that weight allowances are much lower when moving overseas.

PCS season is expensive. It doesn’t have to be this expensive.

📌 Save this and share it with any military family you know who has orders this summer. #militarymoney #militarymoves #pcs #militaryspouse #militaryfamily
Serving in the military can set your kids up financially. Here is how:

1. Start the GI Bill clock early
Transferring at least one month of your Post‑9/11 GI Bill Transfer of Education Benefits to your spouse at 6 years of service.
This starts the 4-year service commitment, which can usually run concurrently with other commitments.
Even if you don’t have kids yet, starting early gives you the flexibility to transfer the benefit to them later.

2. Put on your own oxygen mask first
Many families prioritize retirement savings before college savings.
This can include contributing to accounts like the Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) or an IRA, depending on your situation.

3. Create a “Bank of Mom and Dad”
Encourage saving by paying a high interest rate on money your kids save.
This helps them:
* Build the habit of saving
* See how compound interest works
* Learn that money can grow over time

4. Teach them how money basics early
At age-appropriate levels, show your kids:
* How investing works
* What retirement accounts are
* Why long-term investing matters
Make money a normal conversation in your household.

5. Use tools designed for kids
Apps like My First Nest Egg can help teach investing concepts in a simple, interactive way.

The most important part:
Building your own financial stability can put you in a stronger position to support your family over time.
Money is the least valuable thing you can give your kids.

The real gifts are:
✔️ Financial knowledge
✔️ Confidence with money
✔️ Strong values around saving and investing
Those will last far longer than any dollar amount.

For more ideas on how to help your kids build wealth, comment “KIDS” and I’ll send you our collection of podcast episodes that break this down.
