I don’t usually share “HOT TAKES.” I’m thoughtful with my words and cautious with sensitive conversations, especially when language and intention matter. Talking while multitasking (doing my hair) isn’t something I feel I’m naturally good at for either, and I try to honor that instead of forcing myself through it.

As an autistic person, I’m slowly learning to step outside my comfort zone and try new ways of expressing myself. While also living with OCD, I overthink and revisit things often. I recorded this a few times before it felt honest and aligned.

The autistic Barbie conversation has been sitting with me because it holds so much nuance. Life is layered. People are layered. Representation should be too. This isn’t about being loud. It’s about being thoughtful. If this made you pause or reflect, that’s enough.

“And if I have a girl
I’ll teach her to be strong.

‘Cause even when you’re right
They’ll tell you that you’re wrong.

And if you want something, you’ll
work twice as hard,

‘Cause that’s the only way we get far.”

“Autism is such an invisible disability at times, and to see that it’s being represented through Barbie – everybody knows who Barbie is – it felt really good,” Hill said. “It’s really important to me that Mikko walks through life having representation. It really matters to me that she’s not alone.”

Thank you for sharing our story to help launch the first ever Barbie with Autism. 🩷

We are not broken, we don’t need to be fixed - Precious Hill Autistic Mother and Advocate 🩷

#autism #asd #autismawareness #barbie #mattel
I didn’t know I was autistic growing up.
I just knew I was different. I moved through life feeling incomplete like I was always slightly out of place, trying to catch up to a world that didn’t quite make sense to me. I felt deeply. I was emotional. I struggled to connect. And for a long time, I truly believed something was wrong with my brain, how I thought, how I felt, how I experienced life.

Finding out there was a word for me was exhilarating. It was relief. And it was unbearably enlightening. It felt like the wind was knocked out of me, like I couldn’t breathe.
And somehow… like I was breathing for the first time.

For the first time, my experiences had language. My struggles had context. My life finally made sense. And with that understanding, I learned something even more important: I deserve grace. I deserve acceptance. I deserve accommodations. I am allowed to ask for what I need.

Before that, I was often taken advantage of and manipulated into situations I didn’t fully understand or feel comfortable with. I was afraid to ask questions, afraid of being seen as annoying or combative, when in reality I was just trying to learn and make sense of the world around me.

So holding this Autistic today means more than representation. It feels like someone is finally listening. It reminds me and so many of us, that we are not broken objects in need of fixing. We are whole people with different nervous systems, different communication styles, and different ways of experiencing life.

No single doll could ever represent the entire autism spectrum. Our stories are too vast, too unique, too beautifully complex for that. But this doll represents something powerful: inclusion. Acceptance. Awareness. The acknowledgment that autistic lives, voices, and experiences matter.

For the autistic community, this is being seen.
For neurotypical people, this is an invitation; to understand just a little bit more.

To be understood is the greatest gift 💞 Watch as,, and – all women and girls on the autism spectrum – share their stories of self-discovery, feeling seen, and their first reactions to the all-new autistic Barbie, proudly created in partnership with ASAN (Autistic Self-Advocacy Network).
As someone who has witnessed my daughter working so hard to move from being nonverbal for over four years to speaking some words and sentences, I know how much effort goes into every sound. Some days her mouth feels tired. The muscles, the coordination, all of it, especially after so long of communicating without words or exerting less oral motor effort. We’ve been using this for two years with our speech practice.

Here is what these tools do and why they help:

* Textured Barrel Tip:
Provides sensory feedback across the gums, cheeks, tongue, and lips. This type of oral stimulation increases awareness of oral structures, which supports better placement of the tongue and lips. It also encourages chewing movements and jaw stability.

* Soft Edge Tip:
Useful for precise or fine motor points, such as working behind the teeth or practicing specific sounds like /L/. For children with apraxia or limited practice, pinpointing small areas helps with movement control and building muscle memory

Research on childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) shows that therapy is most effective when movement during actual speech is practiced often, with repetition, feedback, and intensity. Tools that provide tactile or sensory feedback can support this work by increasing sensitivity, awareness, and reducing fatigue. However, non-speech oral motor exercises alone, without actual speech practice, have not been shown to significantly change speech sound production. The greatest progress comes from practicing speech itself, with tools like these used as supports.

For my daughter, this means she gets more consistent practice even on days when she has less energy. These tools are helping her mouth feel stronger, less exhausted, and more coordinated. They allow us to work on specific sounds in a precise and supportive way.

This is not a quick fix, but it does provide her with the background support she needs; strength, coordination, and endurance. These changes make speaking more sustainable, less tiring, and more positive for her.

We starred in a Documentary two summers ago about what it’s like to travel as a family with a loved one on the spectrum and as it was a challenge, it was a beautiful one. We were able to find new ways to communicate and understand each other.
