I love watching these little ones sprint around like they’re late for something important. Just days old and already doing the most. This one stopped long enough for local photographer to catch it perfectly, and that photo has been living in my head ever since.
QoR watercolors in the palette, Aquash fine and medium tips, A5 hot press sketchbook. The hot press lets the edges stay crisp where I want them and soft where I don’t, which for a bird this fluffy felt right. The feather texture on the back came from short stippled strokes, almost like I was sketching with the brush instead of painting. Those spindly legs were the last thing I added and honestly the most nerve-wracking part. One wrong mark and the whole thing tips over.
Painting a chick this young feels like trying to hold a handful of light. Something still becoming itself. You’re not painting a fully formed creature, you’re painting a question that’s just barely decided to stand up.
Killdeer chicks are precocial, meaning they hatch with their eyes open, fully feathered, and able to run within hours of emerging from the egg. A few days old and already navigating the world on those ridiculous legs.

I took a photo of it but it lived in my head where I let it sit. A few coffee shop sessions, then the final work this morning outside my work before the day started. GraphGear 1000.3 2B and.5 4B for the skin and the eye, blenders to push the shadows back, Blu-Tack to lift the light back out where I needed it. And the Sendak Roll from, which goes everywhere I go.
This one stopped being a drawing somewhere in the middle. The skin, the shadows, the tangle of background behind it. More sculpture than sketch. I could have kept going forever but you have to know when to set the chisel down. It felt like the toad was holding still long enough for me to remember it, and then it was done.
American toads can live over thirty years in the right conditions, which feels impossible for something so small and quiet, just sitting in the leaves outliving nearly everything that walks past it.

Worked in my A5 hot press sketchbook with QoR watercolors. Had to pull out my backup palette for this one. Needed a couple of extra convenience colors to get that beak right, those reds and oranges layering into each other without going muddy. Aquash brushes doing the heavy lifting as always. The hot press paper lets the pigment sit and pool in a way that felt right for him. Soft on the chest. Sharper where the black meets the white.
So many nice folks stopped by to ask what I was working on. There’s something about painting in public that turns strangers into something gentler for a minute. Painting him felt like watching a small tuxedoed thought stand still long enough to be seen.
Atlantic puffins can dive over 200 feet underwater and use their wings to fly through the sea the same way they fly through the air. Same motion. Different medium. Which honestly feels like the most poetic thing a bird could decide to do.

Worked this one entirely in graphite. GraphGear 1000 in.2mm for the whiskers and the finest fur direction,.3mm 2B for building up the body, and the.5mm 4B for the deeper darks in the branch crevices. The branch honestly took me longer than the mouse. All that lichen, bark and flower texture. Tiny worlds inside tiny worlds.
This was based off a photo by Julie Hunt julie_huntartist, which I keep coming back to. The furry focus is the obvious draw but it was really the branch that pulled me in. Retirement is August 1 and I have been carving out more time for this kind of slow looking. Letting drawings breathe.
It felt like watching a small thought balance on the edge of a much older one.
Fun thing about harvest mice. They are one of the only mammals in Europe with a fully prehensile tail. They can hang from grass stems like little acrobats while they feed.

This is a southern leopard frog, rendered with a single.5 mm GraphGear 1000 in 4B, plus a blender and Blu Tack standing in for a kneadable eraser. We don’t have these where I live but the texture pulled me in and I just couldn’t stop tweaking it. Every bump, every fold, every little glint in the eye.
Our pond is full again this spring after a really brutal drought last summer. The frogs are back and singing and honestly it sounds like the yard is finally exhaling. Drawing this felt like sitting with that sound in pencil form, like rain that decided to stay and turn into music.
Fun fact: leopard frogs can leap several feet in a single bound, which feels almost impossible when you look at how still and folded up they sit. The southern has a cooler cousin up here in Ontario, the northern leopard frog. They look almost identical but the northern can survive being partially frozen in winter, its heart slowing to almost nothing until spring thaws it back into singing.

Painted with my Aquash water brushes and QoR watercolors in my palette, on A6 Hot Press paper. The hot press surface lets the feather detail stay crisp, which I needed for the texture on the chest and face. The greens on the posts came from layering thin washes until they felt weathered enough.
The composition kept pulling me back though. Owl on one post. Mouse on the other. Barbed wire stretched between them like a held breath that nobody wants to be the one to let out.
Tawny owls have asymmetrical ear openings, with one set higher than the other, which lets them pinpoint sound in three dimensions. They can hear a mouse moving under leaves in complete darkness.
Also worth saying out loud here. I am retiring from tech and healthcare on August 1 to make art full time. Still letting that land.

Eventually something clicked and I landed on this African penguin. Got the GraphGear 1000s out, the.3mm 2B for the fine detail work and the.5mm 4B for the deep blacks on the back and hood, and just started. Sketchbook open, pencil down. Ninety minutes that felt like three hours in the best possible way. Like the drawing was slowly building a room I could step inside and close the door.
Started at a coffee shop. Finished in a hospital cafeteria at lunch. Which is such a strange sentence but also kind of a perfect one.
African penguins are one of the only penguin species native to Africa, and they’re endangered now, numbers dropping sharply over the last few decades due to overfishing and habitat loss. There’s something quietly urgent about them. Like they’re standing on the edge of something and still managing to look composed.
That’s kind of what drew me to this one.

Painted in my hot press A5 sketchbook with QoR watercolors, using a fine and a medium tip water brush. I let this one stay looser than I normally would in the finishing stages. Didn’t chase every feather. Just let some of the softness live there on the paper.

This piece started as a texture study and turned into something I couldn’t put down. I worked with my three GraphGear 1000s — the.2mm HB,.3mm 2B, and.5mm 4B — layering directional strokes through the long fur and using Blu-Tack to lift graphite and open up highlights in the coat. The background came together with a couple of makeup brushes loaded with loose graphite powder, which let me build that soft vignette without fighting the page.
What I kept returning to was the contrast between the wildness of all that hair and the stillness of the animal’s gaze. Highland cattle are one of the oldest registered breeds in the world — their double-layered coat evolved for brutal Scottish winters, with a coarse outer layer that sheds rain and a soft inner layer that traps warmth. All that drama on the outside, all that quiet on the inside.
This reference image was captured by the talented Dotty Weber, whose eye for these animals is extraordinary — I’ll definitely be coming back to her work again.

The GraphGear 1000s did a lot of heavy lifting here. The.2mm HB for all those tiny bare branches and resting flower heads, the ones that barely register until you look close and realize they’re holding the whole background together. Then the.3mm 2B and.5mm 4B for the ram himself, the fur, the shadow under that mass of horn. And a blender worked into the darker snow areas to keep it from feeling too sharp, too certain.
This reference came from Dotty Weber and I had been wanting to get to it. Something about the bighorn in winter just sat with me. That contrast. Power and stillness sharing the same frame.
Bighorn sheep rams can carry horns weighing up to 30 pounds, as much as all the other bones in their body combined. Which somehow makes the silence around them feel even heavier.
