We popped out to get mushrooms and cheese yesterday morning, but ended up walking in Canterbury for 3 hours. It happens. The city was beautiful. The water in the river was clear. The city centre was full of French schoolchildren. I ended up ‘pardon’ing to a gentleman after hearing their conversation. I get influenced so easily wherever I go. He happened to be French, too,
A very flat candy was, I think, Italian. There had been lots of Italian tourists this year. The cat had an unusual colour, nicely burnt toast. The telephone booth without a telephone is a tourist photo spot now.
After a month of not seeing the city centre, a lot of things have changed. Construction finished, and the road was reopened. A renovated park was a
also reopened. Everyone seemed happier.
I have been working steadily on orders and commission at my pace. Also being interviewed. That made me think a lot. When there is no time pressure, work is much more enjoyable and life is fun.

Chameleon. It was one of the masks went at CAL. I have just realised I have never shared the photo of the mask. The chameleon and his man are now living with a lovely couple. Thank you so much.
I used to make lots of chameleons when I started. One of David Attenborough TV programs made me curious about them. I thought they were so cool. I liked how slowly and deliberately move. I had made chameleons in various sizes, as well as brooches. Recently I thought I haven’t made any chameleons. Then an idea came to me. I enjoyed making it. I’m in to frogs at this moment, but I might start making my old favourite again.

The Selkie commissioned by a lovely lady who moved to Norfolk coast. When I have accepted the commission last year, the lady and I have discussed about the Selkie stories. I had read several versions and retelling, and none had a happy ending. But she read the story with the Selkie comes back annually to see her children. This mask was based on it. The trio of seals had encouraged me all the way. They made me smile every time our eyes met. I called them, my cheerleaders in a banana shape. It was such joy to create this special mask for a special lady. When she told me how happy she felt, I was delighted.
My main work has been commissioned works. I enjoy each part of the process. This type of commission often takes a half year from the initial inquiry to delivery, including waiting time; they let me work at my pace. I am grateful to all my clients for their patience and understanding.

We have visited a handful of mosques. Blue mosque was close from the hotel. We went to see it at night as well as daytime. It was lit up beautifully. The Sultanahmet area seemed safe even at night. There were tourist police patrolling, and there were always tourists walking. I remembered it more beautiful interior somehow. It might have been in the different light. It has six minarets, unlike usual four.
My favourite was peaceful and elegant Beyazit mosque completed in 1506. (Pic 2) Inside was beautifully decorated. (Pic 3). I wanted to visit it again before leaving, but we didn’t make it.
Suleymaniye mosque stands high on the hill top. It is big and looks powerful. The ground has a nice view of the city and waters.
We also visited Kucuk Aya Sophia, which used to be an orthodox church like Aya Sophia. It has a small garden with a tea house.
I used to visit many mosques last time I had been in Turkey. But this time we bought a museum card, so we had focused on those on the card. Museum card costs 105 euros. Topikapi palace alone costs 66 euros, so we quickly covered the capital back. It was worth it. It is valid 5 days. If you like to take time to read all panels etc. at each place, you need 5 days to see most.

Day 4 in Istanbul. I was too tired to post on that day. We climbed two towers. First famous Galata tower, 66.9m, first built in 528. From there one man glided down with bird like wings over 3.3 km to Asian side of the city over Bosphorus in 1632. He was a real Icarus. It was originally a lighthouse. The atmosphere around it was lively.
Then we went to a recommended baklava shop. Karaköy Güllüoğlu. Pastry is fresh and they were very good. Then we took a boat to Maiden’s Tower, which is on a tiny island near Asian side of the city. It was thought to be built in 408BC by Athenian as custom station. Ther were a few stories why it is called Maiden’s Tower. Now young ladies visit with red roses in the hope for love. Good luck!
While waiting for a boat to leave, we had another sweet in the tower, by Bayan.
Then we took a tram and a funicular to reach Taksim square. It is a busy shopping area. Guess what? Mike ate a huge cake and I had baked milk pudding, it might be called burnt milk pudding on the menu, at Saray Mulhal. I love milk rice puddings! (Next day we went there to have a lunch. The same waiter remembered what we had the day before! )
On the street, an old tram runs once a while. It’s a quite charming.
We bought T-shirts, or actually I forced Mike to buy T-shirts to replace his old tatty ones!

Day 5. We went to Rumeli Fortress museum. On the land where the Romans built a fortress, the Ottomans built current fortress. It is the narrowest point of the Bosphorus. Unfortunately, currently under restoration, we were able to see only the ground, not the fortress itself. The water was turquoise. And the view was wonderful.
We went to Galata Mevlevi house museum, which is small. Then Pera museum a fine art museum. The Tortoise Trainer Was one of my favourites. There is a permanent exhibition of weights. Hittite weights of sleeping ducks of various weights as well as frog drew outer attention. The last pic is also a weight. We wondered what shape it is, and found out that it is a knuckle!
On the return trip to the hotel, we took a tram. A mistake. Crazy crowded as it is a bank holiday, and I ended up being next to a very rude man and child. I was unable to move! They were the only unpleasant people I met in Istanbul.

Day 3 afternoon. We headed back to the hotel through Spice market, Grand Bazaar, and then we came across Sulaymaniye mosque. It was on the hill top with amazing view. Decoration inside has beautiful domes and a few tens of tourists were was Mike’s first visit to a mosque. He was impressed. We found the medieval staircases, and returned the route to the hotel through Grand Bazaar. There, I found a replacement agate ring. I broke one in Japan last year. That led us to Beyazit II mosque, which has been my favourite. Those who like books, calligraphy would find it. Hence I am led to it anytime I come to the area. It is beautiful and gentle, an oasis in chaos. I was so glad to find it, again. Decoration is refined and feminine. There was a small exhibition of miniature travelling Korans. You need a magnifying glass to see the writings. Beautifully decorated. There are only a handful of tourists. Highly recommended.

Day 3 morning. First, we walked to Museum of the History of science and technology in Islam. It is located close to Topkapi Palace, but not many people visit. We were the first visitors today. I knew Islamic world had the most knowledge and the highest technology during the medieval time, but I didn’t know how good they were. It was wonderful to learn what people did then. From astrolabes to celestial observatories, a size of a huge park or bigger. (See the model) Sextant equipment was 28m in dia. Just imagine the scale. People observe equinox, planetary movement and the sun. Big observatories were in several places. Mind blowing. The first and the second pics are Water clock of Fez. There were 24 goblets for a day. I wondered why there are 24 hours a day, not 10 or 20 before. Perhaps it came from this.(I will check once back home.)
It is located in an edge of park, and outside is beautiful park. There are a dozen of heron nests. There was an adorable and a bit comical chick on the ground. A cat ambushed it, but it was strong enough to fend it off.
We had a Lunch at Hamdi recommended by a lovely kind lady. It was good. We had a wonderful view from the second floor. Service was great, too. We enjoyed Turkish foods very much there. Thank you!
Continued to our adventure in the afternoon.

Hope in Pandora’s box. She will be my crown jewel of my stand at the CAL. I built her when I was feeling low a couple of years ago. Physically and mentally I was exhausted. I didn’t plant to make Hope, but she appeared. She carries plant and fungi life on her. That’s how I embodied a hope. The first shoot on charred ground. The second and third shoots are growing. Once it looked everything was over, but now there is a hope. She has an enigmatic archaic smile. Her neck has deep blue that represents water, as water is the beginning of life. By creating her, I was telling myself a story of Pandora and assuring myself not to lose a hope. It took me about year to complete her, as I had worked on and off. When I did complete her, I felt euphoric. That was special.
