After 5 years teaching 5th and 6th grade math, this year I’m teaching 5th grade math AND science! Instead of 6 different classes, I only have 3 groups of kids, for 2 periods each. We started multiplying fractions this week, and I‘ve been this resource from with some of my students. It’s a great hands-on way to help them understand what it looks like to multiply fractions. Each pattern block represents a different unit fraction (the hexagon is a whole, the trapezoid is 1/2, the rhombus is 1/3 and the triangle is 1/6.) Her blog post explains it in more detail and includes the link to download this mat for free - I’ll link it in my stories! My students loved this. Kids who usually say they hate working with fractions were literally saying “this is fun!” while we were working. YA LOVE TO SEE IT. 🥰

I wasn’t able to do group work last year, so it was EXTRA exciting to get to pull this activity back out this year for the first time since 2019. It’s nice to have just a little bit of “normal” back after the train wreck that was the 2020-21 school year.
