This part of the day brought me to Jingjiang Princes’ Palace, tucked away on a beautiful university campus in Guilin.
Between the old exhibits, stone rubbings, and a mock exam paper entirely in Chinese characters 📜 It felt like walking straight into a chapter of history.
While wandering the grounds, I sat inside one of the limestone rock shelters where ancient poets once gathered to write. Their poems are still carved into the cliffs today ✍🏽
Sitting there in that quiet shade. I had no idea that this same travel period would become the beginning of my heartbreak collection. The project that eventually grew into my Heartbreak Diary / もういちどperformance.
A little further on, I found a board where visitors could write their names and wish for academic success 🎓 Since I was still finishing my bachelor degree at the time, I added mine too with a lot of hope.
A month later, I graduated. I guess it worked after all ✨

Right after hiking down from Elephant Trunk Hill, this was the very next stop 🗺️
It isn’t called the “Palace of Natural Arts” for no reason. Stepping into a 700,000-year-old limestone cave system is already wild enough, but the way they used vibrant, colorful lights instead of just standard white spotlights makes the entire underworld look completely surreal.

After arriving in Guilin yesterday, today was all about lacing up my shoes and heading out to explore.
The first stop was Elephant Trunk Hill (象鼻山) ⛰️
The most remarkable natural landscapes of the area. The strangler fig roots growing along the stone walls caught my attention as well. Some of them were easily double the height of a person 🌳😲
Before starting my trail up, I passed by ancient rock carving and hidden golden shrines. After a short hike, I was rewarded with a panoramic view across Guilin and the Li River 🏙️🏞️
An incredible start to what would become a full day of exploring ✨

City number three, and the atmosphere has completely shifted once again ⏳
Moving from hyper-technological, international metropolises to Guilin feels like stepping much deeper into China. This is a city beautifully alive with its own internal tourism.
At times, it felt like I might have been the only foreigner around, wandering through places visited mostly by Chinese tourists themselves.
I dropped my bags and went straight out to explore East West Street. I stumbled onto a food market. Trying the green mangoes served with local spices instantly reminded me of eating that exact same incredible combination in both Congo and Malaysia, a flavor you just don’t really experience back in Europe🥭🌶️
I also ran into a giant flagship shop for White Rabbit (大白兔). Seeing a space that huge dedicated entirely to one nostalgic sweet made me realize it’s essentially the Haribo of China. Absolute eye candy. 🐇🍬
Historic walls of Xiaoyaolou and the glowing Sun and Moon Pagodas reflecting over the dark water, closed the day and warm welcome to a brand new adventure 🌌

It feels like no matter where you wander in a Chinese city, there is always something impressive waiting on your path around the corner.
Finding the Great Buddha Temple (Dafo Temple) nestled right in the middle of such a hyper-modern commercial district was incredibly cool. The contrast of the traditional woodwork towering against the neon city lights is something I don’t think I’ll ever get used to 🏙️
I ended my final night in Guangzhou grabbing some late-night food nearby, wrapping up a busy but beautiful Day 6. My time here was short, but it left a lasting impression.
Tomorrow, I pack up and head to the next city 🎞️

No real plans. Just wandering through Guangzhou and ending up at Comic City.
What I thought would be a quick visit turned into hours of exploring arcade floors, anime stores, fashion shops, and collector displays.
I stumbled upon unexpected interests. Seeing Evangelion appear again all the way in China was one of those. It’s not exactly the most current fandom anymore, which made finding it even more fun 🤖✨ The displays alone were worth stopping for.
And of course, I couldn’t leave empty handed.
After all that exploring, I finally found a My Melody plushie 🌸🩷 who has officially joined the Sanrio collection back home.

After stepping off the bullet train 🚄 I headed straight into the historic heart of Guangzhou’s Liwan District.
The pace felt completely different from Shenzhen 🌿 Older streets, traditional architecture, and the feeling that history was much closer to the surface.
Part of the afternoon was spent wandering through the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall (陈家祠) 🏛️ but the place I was most excited about was the Cantonese Opera Art Museum (粤剧艺术博物馆) 🎭
Years ago, I watched Farewell, My Concubine 🎬 I sat through the entire three hours completely unprepared for how deeply that world, its history, and its operatic art style would pull me in. Ever since, experiencing it in its true birthplace was a quiet dream of mine ✨
And the city must have known, because the moment I arrived at the open-air theatre, a live performance began 🎶 A traditional duet echoed across the stone bridges while I stood there trying to take it all in.
A pretty perfect introduction to Guangzhou and its cultural heritage 🎭🏮✨

Packing up to head to city number two. The journey turned out to be an entire experience on its own.
Stepping into the station felt exactly like walking into a massive airport terminal. From checking in with your passport to navigating the giant waiting halls full of shops, the scale of transit here is honestly wild.
Boarded the high-speed bullet train. The interior carriage felt incredibly cozy and comfortable, which was the perfect excuse to just sit back and relax ☁️
With a bag of snacks in one hand and my luggage in the other, we settled in for a smooth ride across the province. Before we knew it, the Guangzhou skyline was already coming into view 🚕
Volume 2 starts now. 🎞️

Wandering the city in the heat had us looking for a cooling escape, so we decided to chase the breeze at the coast.
Xiao Mei Sha is definitely more of a “resort” vibe than a wild beach. Everything is curated, from the futuristic architecture to the timed entertainment stands along the shore. Even the water was the perfect temperature. Exactly what we needed to reset 🏖️
One thing I’ve quickly learned: people in China love to sing. Whether it’s a professional stage or a corner, there is always a performance happening. This beachside set was just my first taste of it, but it definitely wasn’t the last... 🎶
