Ran into this creative icon sometime last year. We had such a great conversation. Tried to talk him into how photography was a lot like skateboarding and the importance of being really bad at stuff every once in a while. Not sure he bought it! Ha. Thanks for letting me interrupt your lunch and for the pics

2016 part 2. I was wandering everywhere but I found a few haunts that really worked for me. The beach, The Grove mall, The Hollywood Farmer’s Market and Larchmont blvd. was the photo director at Vice LA at the time and I was pitching him stories directly from my walks. These were my first paid photo jobs. Because I was self taught I can see all the little revelations I was making when I look back at these. Partway through 2016 I realized how much better vertical was to horizontal for isolating subjects. Suddenly all my work became vertical. Finally 2016 was the best cause somehow found me and began hiring me regularly for refinery 29 including a fashion shoot with retirees in Miami, the National cheerleading championships, and a weekend in Washington where I covered Trump’s first inauguration (which was horrifying) and the women’s march which was full of hope. That year solidified my career as a photographer and set me on this strange path. Maybe 2026 will be the year I get back to photographing on the street a bit. Feels wayyy too scary these days. 2016 was a very different time.
It’s 2016. At this point I’d been shooting daily with flash around LA for 3 years. I had crystallized some of my favorite ideas by then. Ideas about details, flash and all the things that turned my head. A lot of the technical and speed stuff was muscle memory from the daily practice so I could just walk around and get myself into some sort of weird trance. I was getting crazy close. I look back on the photos I was taking then and see so much love in the frame. Love for LA, color, the body and love for my own weirdo ideas. 2016 changed my life in so many concrete ways. Wild time for me for sure.
Some months back I got an email from Director of Content for the USC Trojans football team. He said he really enjoyed my work and would I like to come and photograph a couple games as a guest photographer. (I ran around my apartment screaming). It was an incredible experience and I learned so much (like don’t get too close to the flames, don’t get in the middle of a play and watch out for the epic horse that rides around the stadium after every touchdown). You know I love all things sports, the mindset, the bodies, the grit and the spectacle. I’m obsessed now and can’t wait to go back next season for more. Huge thank you Rob and everyone at the for being so welcoming and letting me wear an official vest and run around the field like an absolute maniac. So grateful for where my camera takes me. Sad we all just look at photos so small these days cause these really feel large.
Found this amazing group of young queer kids in my neighborhood and now I’m obsessed. They remind me so much of myself when I was that age. Things were so different back then. So here I am at the edge of a new project. What can they tell me about what’s changed and what’s still the same. Is it possible to be queer, rebellious and riotous in the age of social media? What do they want for themselves that I couldn’t even fathom back then? Where we going? Feeling excited about it.
