Das erste Abendlicht unserer Schweizreise.
Wir standen auf knapp 2.400 Metern vor dem Rhonegletscher, während die Sonne hinter dem Horizont versank und die Felsgrate für einen kurzen Moment in Gold aufflammten.
Bei tief stehender Sonne legt das Licht einen deutlich längeren Weg durch die Atmosphäre zurück. Das Blau wird herausgefiltert, Rot- und Orangetöne bleiben übrig.
Die Felsgrate werden zur Leinwand.
Für Fotografen bedeutet das: Das Zeitfenster ist klein aber nur, wenn man bereits wartet, bevor es beginnt. 😉
Der Furkapass ist je nach Wetterlage von Juni bis Oktober befahrbar.
Wer in den ersten oder letzten Wochen der Saison kommt, hat die Berge und die Ruhe oft ganz für sich.
Dieser Abend war der Startschuss und er hat die Messlatte für alle folgenden Tage hoch gelegt.

The first evening light of our Switzerland trip.
We stood at almost 2,400 meters in front of the Rhone Glacier as the sun sank behind the horizon and the rocky ridges briefly flared up in gold.
When the sun is low, the light travels a much longer path through the atmosphere. The blue wavelengths are filtered out, leaving behind reds and oranges.
The rocky ridges become a canvas.
For photographers, this means the window of opportunity is small but only if you’re already waiting before it begins. 😉
The Furka Pass is open from June to October, depending on the weather.
Those who come in the first or last weeks of the season often have the mountains and the peace all to themselves.
This evening was the starting shot and it set the bar extremely high for all the days that followed.

Über zwei Stunden standen wir auf der Seceda in wechselnden Regenfeldern und dichten Wolken, 2.500 Meter über dem Tal.
Sicht: kaum. 😶🌫️ Laune: im Keller. 😤
Die Seceda ohne Wolken ist für mich aber nur die halbe Seceda, also warteten wir.
Als die Wolkendecke endlich aufriss, traute ich meinen Augen kaum. Zu meiner Linken leuchtete dieser Regenbogen.
Ein Regenbogen braucht zwei Zutaten: Wassertröpfchen und Sonne aus der richtigen Richtung.
Von einem Berggipfel aus kann man einen Regenbogen manchmal als vollständigen Kreis sehen, weil der Horizont tief genug liegt.
Ich hatte das Glück, von oben auf den Talkessel hinabblicken zu können, wie durch ein Fenster in eine andere Welt.
Das Warten hatte sich nicht nur für das Zielfoto gelohnt.

We stood on the Seceda for over two hours amid shifting rain showers and dense clouds, 2,500 meters above the valley.
Visibility: almost zero. 😶🌫️ Mood: in the basement. 😤
For me, the Seceda without clouds is only half the Seceda, so we waited.
When the cloud cover finally tore open, I could hardly believe my eyes. To my left, this rainbow appeared.
A rainbow needs two ingredients: water droplets and sunlight from the right direction.
From a mountain summit, you can sometimes see a rainbow as a complete circle because the horizon is low enough.
I was lucky enough to look down into the valley basin as if through a window into another world.
The wait had been worth it, and not just for the perfect photo.

Klarer Himmel, eisiger Wind und dann dieser Moment: Die letzten Strahlen der Sonne treffen das 3246m hohe Wasenhorn und der Gipfel leuchtet wie glühende Lava.
Der Berg heißt auf Italienisch Punta di Terrarossa, was übersetzt „Roter Fels“ bedeutet.
Das Gestein ist reich an Eisenoxid. Derselbe Stoff, der den Mars rot färbt, lässt diesen Gipfel im Abendlicht brennen.
Der Simplonpass auf 2005 m ü. M. ist einer der wenigen ganzjährig befahrbaren Alpenpässe der Schweiz und bietet bei Sonnenuntergang ein spektakuläres 360° Panorama auf die Walliser Alpen.

Clear skies, icy wind, and then that moment: The last rays of the sun hit the 3,246 m high Wasenhorn, and the summit glows like molten lava.
The mountain is called Punta di Terrarossa in Italian, which translates as “Red Rock.”
The rock is rich in iron oxide the same substance that gives Mars its red color and makes this peak burn in the evening light.
The Simplon Pass at 2,005 m above sea level is one of the few Alpine passes in Switzerland that remains open all year round. At sunset, it offers a spectacular 360° panorama of the Valais Alps.

Der Aletschgletscher ist mit 22,6 km Länge der längste und flächenmäßig größte Gletscher der Alpen und war der eigentliche Grund für unsere Reise in die Schweiz, da mich seine brachiale Schönheit schon seit Längerem in seinen Bann gezogen hatte.
Den gesamten Nachmittag sind wir die weite Hochebene abgelaufen, um für das vorhergesagte Spektakel am Abend die schönste Perspektive auf den Gletscher zu finden.
Am Ende sind wir schließlich in der Nähe des Viewpoints Moosfluh eingerastet. 😁
Der Wetterbericht hatte einen wolkigen Himmel versprochen und wir warteten auf den Sonnenuntergang.
Die untergehende Sonne hat dann in Verbindung mit den düsteren Wolken eine einzigartig schöne Lichtsituation kreiert.
Mit dem Ergebnis dieses Abends war ich mehr als zufrieden.

The Aletsch Glacier, with its 22.6 km length, is the longest and largest glacier in the Alps by area.
It was the real reason for our trip to Switzerland, as its raw, brutal beauty has fascinated me for a long time.
We spent the entire afternoon hiking across the vast high plateau to find the most beautiful perspective of the glacier for the predicted spectacle in the evening.
In the end, we settled down near the Moosfluh viewpoint. 😁
The weather forecast had promised a cloudy sky, and we waited for sunset.
The setting sun then created a uniquely beautiful light situation in combination with the dark clouds.
I was more than satisfied with the result of that evening.

Nachdem ich dieses Panorama zum Sonnenuntergang fotografieren konnte, blieb ich noch, denn ich hatte das Glück, dass das Wetter stabil blieb, um auch noch die Milchstraße über dem Watzmann zu fotografieren.
Fast alles passte perfekt... Der einzige Störfaktor war der Mond, der mit seiner Helligkeit das Licht der Milchstraße überstrahlte.
Glücklicherweise bewegte er sich gegen 22:30 Uhr langsam zum Horizont und verschaffte mir die Gelegenheit, die erhofften Fotos mitzunehmen.
Als ich die Ultraweitwinkelfotos im Kasten hatte, entschied ich mich noch, mit meinem guten alten lichtstarken 50mm zu experimentieren.
Dabei entstand dieses Foto, das mein persönlicher Favorit aus dem Jahr 2019 ist.

After being able to photograph this panorama at sunset, I stayed longer because I was lucky that the weather remained stable to also capture the Milky Way above the Watzmann.
Almost everything was perfect... The only disrupting factor was the moon, which with its brightness overshadowed the light of the Milky Way.
Fortunately, it slowly moved towards the horizon around 10:30 PM, giving me the opportunity to take the hoped-for photos.
Once I had the ultrawide angle photos in the bag, I decided to experiment with my trusty old fast 50mm lens.
This resulted in this photo, which is my personal favorite from 2019.

Ein paar Tage bevor dieses Foto entstand, war ich bereits einmal am Passo Giau, doch die Aufnahmen haben mich nicht wirklich überzeugt, weil ständig tiefe Wolken vor den Bergspitzen hingen.
Starker Wind und später einsetzender Regen machten Drohnenflüge unmöglich.
Deshalb sind wir ein paar Tage später nochmal hochgefahren. Diesmal hatten wir deutlich mehr Glück mit den Bedingungen vor Ort.
Mit der Drohne war schnell eine starke Komposition gefunden.
Im Vordergrund schlängelt sich der Passo Giau durchs Bild, dahinter thront der 2.595 m hohe Monte Gusela, der gerade von den Wolken freigegeben wurde, während unser Auto im Bild als perfekter Größenvergleich dient.

A few days before this photo was taken, I had already been to Passo Giau once, but I wasn’t happy with the shots.
Thick clouds kept covering the mountain peaks the whole time.
Strong wind and later rain made it impossible to fly the drone.
So we headed back up a few days later — and this time we were much luckier with the conditions.
A strong composition was quickly found with the drone. In the foreground, the Passo Giau winds its way through the frame, while the 2,595 m high Monte Gusela rises dramatically behind it, just freed from the clouds. Our car in the image serves as the perfect sense of scale.

Sonnenuntergang am Simplonpass.
Ein relativ wolkenarmer Abend mit starkem Wind.
Spontan sind wir zum Simplonpass gefahren, in der Hoffnung, ein richtig schönes Abendrot einzufangen.
Zuvor leuchteten die umliegenden Berge im goldenen Licht der untergehenden Sonne.
Der Lichtstreifen wanderte rasch zu den Gipfeln hinauf, bis diese schließlich in kräftigem Rot-Orange erstrahlten.
Das perfekte Motiv lag direkt vor mir: das 3192 Meter hohe Hübschhorn, das an diesem Abend seinem Namen wirklich alle Ehre machte.
Einen passenden Vordergrund musste ich nicht lange suchen.
Das umliegende Gelände war ideal, denn der Weg durch die Gräser bildete die perfekte führende Linie.

Sunset at Simplon Pass.
It was a relatively cloudless evening with strong winds.
On a whim, we drove up to the Simplon Pass, hoping to catch a beautiful sunset glow.
Before that, the surrounding mountains were bathed in the golden light of the setting sun.
The band of light quickly climbed toward the peaks until they finally glowed in intense orange-red.
The perfect subject lay right in front of me: the 3,192-metre-high Hübschhorn, which truly lived up to its name that evening.
I didn’t have to search long for a suitable foreground.
The surrounding terrain was ideal — the path winding through the grass created the perfect leading line.

Partnach Gorge. A cloudy, rainy day... As we were in the area, we decided to visit the Partnach Gorge. We had just entered the gorge route when it suddenly started to rain extremely. Now it was only possible in one direction and we had to walk through the rain for better or for worse. Luckily I had my rain cover for the camera with me. Without it, photography would not have been possible. In the end I had a few atmospheric photos on the memory card, the water was in our shoes and we were wet to the skin. A trip that I will not soon forget.

Als ich begann, mein Equipment zu verstauen, erschien plötzlich ein Lichtpunkt über der linken Bergspitze.
Der Punkt wuchs rasch und bald wurde klar: Es war der Mond, der sich in erstaunlicher Geschwindigkeit über den Berg schob und die Landschaft in ein magisches Licht tauchte.

As I began packing up my equipment, a light suddenly appeared over the left mountain peak.
The point quickly grew, and it soon became clear: it was the moon, moving at an astonishing speed over the mountain and casting the landscape in a magical light.
