“Before we sprint ahead to the future, take a breath. Think of all the things you’ve achieved, the support you’ve received along the way, and the incredible world you have started to create for yourself. Because this is just the beginning.” — 2026 Student Convocation Speaker Madeline Hettrick (BFA Filmmaking ‘26)

“My installation is basically the way I perceive memory in my brain,” says senior student Melanie Lopez. “The way memory fades, memories that you don’t remember but are still there, and even things that you do remember, but you can’t remember clearly.”

For this year’s second BFA Visual Arts Thesis Exhibition, Lopez’s submission, titled “Behind the Fishtank,” combines her artistic practice with her special interest in aquatics. The installation features photo prints by Lopez, which have been submerged in a collection of fishtanks. Inside the tanks, Lopez has added bacterial starters like algae and fruit—something she learned working at a pet store for nearly four years. Over the course of the exhibition, the photos will begin to distort or decay, she says, a reflection of how memories change over time.

“The photos are never really ‘done,’” Lopez says. “Sometimes they’ll literally fall apart, while other times algae will grow on them. Some will deteriorate, and then other times, they’ll have things growing around them.”

“Behind the Fishtank” is now on view at Mason Gross Galleries as part of “Perennial,” our second BFA Visual Arts Thesis Exhibition of the year, through May 7. Click the “Events” link in our bio for gallery hours, exhibition details, and more 🐟🔗
