“Meryl Meisler: Queer-Friendly Nightlife Now” is currently on view at Center for Photography Woodstock as part of the inaugural Upstate Photography Biennial in Kingston, New York
The exhibition presents new photographs of contemporary queer nightlife, capturing drag performers, burlesque artists, DJs, and clubgoers with the same analog techniques Meisler used in the 1970s. Moving between stage performances and candid backstage moments, the images celebrate community, self-expression, and the enduring energy of nightlife culture.

For this exhibit, I (Meryl) photographed events at Unicorn Bar in Kingston, the Hudson Valley’s only dedicated LGBTQ+ nightlife venue.

Come meet and see the work of sixteen artists from the Women Photographers Collective of the Mid-Hudson Valley, the exhibition reflects an ongoing commitment to shared dialogue, support, and creative exchange. At a time when many feel unsafe, unseen, or divided, this exhibition gathers photographs that turn our attention toward what holds us together. Across intimate moments, lived environments, and collective actions, the works in this exhibition suggest that community is not a fixed entity but an ongoing practice—formed through gestures of care, sustained through resilience, and activated through connection.

The 1978 photo by Meryl Meisler, Two Women Embrace on Floor Next to Jupiter’s Legs, Les Mouches, NY, signals Abraham’s intention to rebalance the history of queer nightlife which has too often focused on white gay men. “I loved the idea of reappropriating the glory hole,” she says of the holes punched in the walls of toilet cubicles so man can have anonymous sex with each other. “What if we glimpse into it and see queer female pleasure too?” *
