Seventh century Germans worshipped pagan gods and practiced child sacrifice to appease them. St Boniface came upon one such sacrificial ceremony one Christmas Eve and—with the help of divine intervention—slew a sacred oak tree around which people were worshipping Thor.
In its place grew a fir tree, which the evangeliser said was the sign of endless life for believers.
