My symptoms started with swelling in my hands, feet, ankles; followed by loss of sight-severe iritis in my left eye. I was easy to injure myself, experiencing multiple sprains, bruising easily and frequent trips to the washroom with bleeding and lower right abdominal pain.
I now suffer from a stricture- narrowing in my right bowel and sustained severe damage to my ileum-small bowel connection.
I managed to avoid surgery for now 🤞I had GI infusions every 8 weeks for 2 years and now moved on to self injections 💉 every 2 weeks, for the rest of my life; until we find a cure. This helps to decrease swelling- inflammation and sadly constantly weaken my immune system, which slows the damage from the disease itself.
Some days I feel like my old self while in remission 🙏🏼 other days I can end up in the hospital fighting for my life from a simple cold I just couldn’t get over. This disease has no discrimination and often times no warning. I follow a very strict diet monitored by IBD dieticians and follow up regularly with my amazing physician, GI team and nursing staff 💜
Each year on Sunday June 2nd, I walk ‘The Gutsy Walk’ with The Crohn’s & Colitis foundation. I not only walk for myself, I walk for all of those who suffer from this debilitating autoimmune disease.
