No two bodies are made the same; a constructive investment for anyone looking to be in intense and consistent practice is learning how to tune their body to dance. Practice is everything, but repetitive practice works the same muscle groups, creating or deepening muscle imbalances that can lead to chronic injury. It’s important to strengthen, and just as important to condition the instrument so that dance can work its way through you.
Any high functioning athlete is super protective of their recovery and rightfully so. When the body is put through so much, it needs a little push to recover - supplements, pre and post dance routines, icing, massages, food, sleep.
The biggest game changer is learning how to rest and when to detach from your dance. So bizarre right, who even needs to learn how to rest? But sadly, resting is not doomscrolling or consuming more content (it could be, maybe 0.5% of the time). To relax deeply is a skill, for the body’s recovery to be 10x faster than when left to itself.
There’s so much in being a performing artiste. About 90% of it is in building a mindset and making lifestyle choices. As always, most vital is to find what works for YOUR goals ✨

Truly happy to have re-learnt this Ashtapadi choreographed by Renjith Anna, under the artistic guidance of Vijna akka. Observing a choreography across time - from when it is made to how it evolves over the years and across different bodies, is a fascinating lesson in how all great things take time and a clear artistic vision. Coupled with the divine musical composition of Pt. Raghunath Panigrahi, it gives us layer after layer to peel, but so instinctively and effortlessly. I will forever be in awe of the usage of the body here which is so subtle, specific, and central to the narrative.
Watching Vijna akka move, and facilitating movement according to one’s body, is a core learning experience I will carry with me always. My gratitude to them for their generosity ♥️🙏🏽

Suddenly, it all begins to make sense. Things fall into place. But it takes years to get here, I think. In my case, it took decades. Through these years, I have questioned this tradition unforgivingly, criticised harshly, seen it through multiple lenses of which many were not even mine, done it without liking it because I must and also because I didn’t know what else to do, clung to it without a why, even felt lowkey embarrassed by it, left it - only to return to it and see it teeming with answers. It takes years to see the proportion of art, poetics, emotion, philosophy, religion, devotion, and physicality in dance- and to understand the unique mix of your own ratios of these components.
Grateful to my parents and my teacher Smt. Jayanthi Subramaniam for showing me what the love of literature can do. Several great teachers in my journey have added to this, and I’m so grateful 🙏🏽 But they were the first and most formative figures in whose eyes I’ve seen a glint of excitement every time they felt the magic of good writing.
A moment in class from the Varnam Intensive- funny how an activity I avoided for years now engulfs me 😊 Also funny how thoughts you didn’t know you had find their way into words at the right moment.
