I’m sorry to announce that I don’t reward my class for things they’re already expected to do. Walking quietly. Cleaning up their own messes. Working independently when asked.
These are not “extras.” They’re literally the baseline.
To be clear, I’m not anti-positive reinforcement… I’m just anti turning everyday responsibilities into a reward system. I think that if we celebrate every basic expectation with prizes, points, or candy, we accidentally teach kids that responsibility is optional unless there’s a reward attached. Plus, it hurts their chance of developing self-motivation.
I’ll hype them up for their effort. I’ll always celebrate growth. I’ll recognize kindness, creativity, and perseverance.
But meeting the basic expectations as a student? That’s just… the job.

Not everything meaningful in teaching can be tracked, graphed, or measured. In fact, some of your most important work will never show up in test scores, observations, or evaluations. It’s the student who felt safe in your room, the quiet check-in that changed someone’s day, and the consistency you showed when you weren’t sure if you could keep going. The patience you practiced when no one was watching can’t be measured, and the encouragement you gave was done without expecting any recognition. Just because that work isn’t always visible doesn’t mean it isn’t valuable. It matters deeply, even when it goes unacknowledged. In many ways, it’s the heart of what teaching really is.
