The poems chart a journey from the formative currents of early Dalit feminist writing to the emergent queer, contemporary, political expressions of today. is the book’s editor and curator, artist and anti-caste activist. At the event, special guest, noted writer-activist will speak about the history of the Samvadini Stree Literary Movement and her foreword to the book. This will be followed by a conversation featuring Ambedkarite women poets, Sharda Navale,, Varsha Bhise and translator. Maveli Publications is backed by an Ambedkarite collective of artists and writers. It includes the works of 13 visionary poets like, Dr Pawar, Ushakiran Atram and Disha Pinki Shaikh. “‘Dalit women are treated like little pickle on a thali – just for taste,’ writer-activist Hira Bansode once said to me,” says Shrujana N. Shridhar, the book’s editor, and brilliant artist and anti-caste activist, now doing her MFA at Parsons School of Design, New York. A tremendous loss for India and the world. Heartfelt condolences, family and friends.

Studying Raghu Rai’s photographs—along with those of many other distinguished photographers—set me off on a thrilling journey 30 years ago. I was doing the visual research for ‘In Black and White: What Has Independence Meant for Women?’, for a photography exhibition in 1996 organised by Point of View in the 50th year of India’s independence. POV is a non-profit headed by Bishakha Datta, Programme Lead and beloved friend, that amplifies women’s voices through popular media. I am currently Vice Chairperson on the board of POV; 2026 is POV’s 30th anniversary.
The In Black and White exhibition had 125 images by 42 photographers, and travelled to 25+ cities on India and US tours. See
It was an auspicious beginning at POV: since then I have been involved in a wide range of feminist/ gender-based work with POV, including:
*I wrote for the book And Who Will Make the Chapatis? (On elected women leaders and political power in rural Maharashtra, Stree, 1998)
--Curated Made By Women: the International Women’s Film Festival, that travelled to 15+ cities (2004 and 2005).
*Wrote Life Begins on Thursday, a digital graphic novella published by POV, 2020. On how the relationship between two sportsgirls--the middle-class teenager Tara and the Adivasi Gond tribal Guruwari--turns from revulsion to respect (it’s a quick 5 min read):
*Inclusive film screenings: Involved with the “audio description” of films for the blind, for inclusive screenings for the blind and sighted, POV and Mumbai Film Festival, for Tu Hai Mera Sunday and Turup, 2017.
*Impact screening: Conducted a workshop for the empowerment of blind women, following a screening of audio-described #SecretSuperstar, for POV- Vora Industrial School for Blind Women, Mumbai, 2019

I was so honoured to be a Jury member of the same Semaine de La Critique/Critics’ Week of the Cannes Film Festival in 2023.
Kapadia had won the Grand Prix at Cannes for her debut fiction feature All We Imagine As Light, 2024. It was the first Indian film in Cannes’ Competition in 30 years!
She won Golden Globes’ nominations for Best Director and Best Foreign Language Film, for it in 2025.
(I was also honoured to be Golden Globes’ International Voter in 2023, the sole voter invited from India).
Kapadia’s A Night of Knowing Nothing (Directors’ Fortnight) won the L'Oeil d'Or (Golden Eye) for Best Documentary Award at Cannes, 2021.
The other #SIC Jury members are Canadian actor Théodore Pellerin (Lurker), French singer-songwriter Oklou, Ghanaian-British producer Ama Ampadu (My Father’s Shadow), and journalist and director of the Bangkok World Film Festival Donsaron Kovitvanitcha.
Kapadia’s early shorts are remarkable too—Dopahar ke Badal, Afternoon Clouds (in Hindi and Nepali) was at the Cannes’ Cinefondation in 2017 and What is the Summer Saying was selected at the Shorts in 2018, where I had recommended the film as their South Asia Delegate.
I’ve been a fan of Payal’s distinctive, original, experimental voice since her student shorts (above) when she was studying at the Film and Television Institute of India, #ftii. And am thrilled to watch her meteoric rise--an inspiration for filmmakers—and women filmmakers—everywhere and especially in South Asia.
Here’s my review of Afternoon Clouds, in 2017 (2min) on my YouTube channel:
Just look at her fearlessness! She told me she made What is the Summer Saying by first recording just audio in the forests beyond Pune, selecting interesting audio sounds, then shooting images to go with the sounds.” Rule book jaye bhaad mein! And look where it has got her!
