Large and rare antique French porcelain and giltwood menorah by Samson

Typically made from metal, this gilt porcelain menorah is highly unusual. Its design is modelled after a Torah Ark - the ornate cabinet in a synagogue that houses the sacred Torah scrolls and represents the holiest space within the synagogue. The overall composition is based on a silver model created in Brody, Ukraine, in 1787 by the maker known as BZK, now part of the H. Ephraim and Mordecai Benguiat Family Collection.

Constructed from three separate porcelain elements, each piece bears the blue Samson mark on its reverse. Surrounding the menorah is an exquisitely carved giltwood frame, which extends the composition outward, further emphasizing the piece’s importance and grandeur.

Decoration of this sort was characteristic of Islamic pottery from c., named after Iznik, a town in western modern-day Turkey. Rich tones cobalt-blue became distinctive of these wares, and the 16th century saw a particular interest and appreciation for pieces in this style, which combined Arabesque and Chinese motifs, before the decline of the style towards the end of the 17th century.
