And best of all — it’s so easy to visit. Any visitor to the in Amsterdam can head to the balcony (in room 2.16) to look at this magnificent space. Just remember to stay silent to keep the magic 🤫 ✨

this is my gold-medal winning exhibition of the year. i spent three-and-a-half hours inside while it was glorious sunshine outside 🤗
the exhibition that enthralled me was ‘The Edwardians: Age of Elegance’ at the King’s Gallery, at Buckingham Palace
the show promised “the opulence and glamour of the Edwardian age” through 300 objects from the
it was a who’s-who of contemporary artists of the period. Frederic Leighton, Edward Burne-Jones, Rosa Bonheur, John Singer Sargent and William Morris — all sat side by side 🖼️
it covered the long Edwardian era, beginning while Edward and his wife Alexandra were still Prince and Princess of Wales and closing at the end of the Great War
what I really liked about it was that it managed to achieve what a surprisingly large numbers of shows don’t: it was thoroughly entertaining
yes, there was lots of history, there was academic rigour. but it was also just a joy, a pleasure to spend time in. it was FUN! 🙌
i feel the curators at the King’s Gallery got the memo. it was a rollicking rummage through the royal archives 👑

as 2025 comes to an end, here’s my second most favourite exhibition of the year (the winner will be revealed v soon!)
my runner-up is the incredible ‘Ryan Gander X Edgar Degas. Pas de Deux’ at the hugely impressive in The Hague in the Netherlands 🇳🇱
you walked into their main gallery and were met with over twenty feisty bronze ballerinas 🩰
they’re the work of British artist, from a series he began in 2008 which is a direct reinterpretation of Edgar Degas’ 1880 work Petite danseuse de quatorze ans (The little fourteen-year-old dancer). AKA, one of the most famous sculptures in the world
in a huge coup, the Degas was there too. Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in nearby Rotterdam offered a rare loan of their 1922 cast of the famous bronze
Gander riffs off Degas’ boldness to great effect in this series. his ballerinas sleep, look bored, play hide-and-seek, crawl on the floor — and one even enjoys a crafty smoke 🚬
they were everywhere you looked in this brilliant exhibition. it was the first time more than one of Gander’s dancers have been shown together, having been painstakingly reunited from all over the world by the show’s curator — and the museum’s director —
there was a real joy to the experience of visiting this show. yes, it was partly the seaside location (sunshine streams into this gallery) but it was also Gander’s playful creations 💙💙💙
i just wish i’d had a second visit!

Vermeer is one of Europe’s greatest artists. and standing in front of one of his most famous creations — this exquisite Milkmaid painting — is a must for any art lover
it blew my mind seeing it this week in the flesh at the in Amsterdam
360 years old and looking as luminous as Johannes Vermeer intended. the shapes, the colours, the composition are perfect 👌
any visit to the Netherlands should involve a trip to the Rijksmuseum’s Gallery of Honour to experience standing in front of this perfect, globally-famous masterpiece
