Albrecht Weinberg, one of the last Holocaust survivors, died yesterday at the age of 101.

For me, meeting Albrecht was one of the most formative encounters of recent years.
During the Nazi dictatorship, he survived three concentration camps, including Auschwitz, as well as several death marches. Most of his relatives, including his parents, were murdered in Auschwitz.

He remained silent for a long time about the horrors of that time, about the unimaginably brutal period of his life. For 40 years, he did not want to set foot in the country of the perpetrators. He went far away, to New York, where he worked as a butcher in the Bronx.

In 2012, he returned to his East Frisian hometown and met the care worker Gerda Dänekas in his retirement home. A great, unexpected stroke of luck. When Gerda retired, she and Albrecht started sharing an apartment. “Probably the oldest shared flat in Germany,” he later said.
Thanks in part to Gerda, Albrecht began to speak again. In recent years, he became one of the most sought-after eyewitnesses.

I visited him in Leer in the summer of 2024 for. We had lunch together and I brought him photographs. Images of him and his favourite tree at the Mittelbau-Dora memorial site, which I had taken a few weeks earlier. From the beginning of 1945, he was forced to perform slave labour there. Every year, on the anniversary of liberation, he returned.
When we said goodbye, he gave me a “yellow star,” the symbol used to mark and persecute Jews during the Holocaust. Members of his family had been forced to produce these stars in a concentration camp.
I still do not know what the right place for it is. Maybe there isn’t one.

Until the very end, he warned about rising antisemitism. And he warned about the AfD. In protest against Friedrich Merz, who had pushed for stricter immigration policy together with the AfD, he returned his Federal Cross of Merit.
What struck me most was his humanity and his humour. Having experienced the worst that human beings can do to one another, Albrecht met the world with humanity, moral clarity, and an infectious sense of humour.

In his shared flat room in Leer, he passed away yesterday.

Germany’s oil and gas production is shrinking — despite rising prices and the energy crisis.

For, I traveled through Germany and visited the gas companies Neptune Energy and Harbour Energy.

At the beginning of March, a big competition for over 200 young ballet dancers was supposed to take place in Kyiv. Then the brutal war in Ukraine began. The competition had to be cancelled. Instead of ballet, bombs were falling. Young people flee the city and find new and safe homes. Over 80 young Ukrainians, usually between the ages of 12 and 18, were accepted at prestigious ballet schools throughout Europe.

I had the honor to meet many wonderful ballet students. Thank you Masha, Dima, Martin, Sofia, Alisa!

Igor Gabidullin (52) smokes a pipe in his shack in Kyubume on February 11, 2020. The settlement was originally built for road workers, but after the collapse of the Soviet Union more and more of its inhabitants moved away. In 2007 the electricity in the settlement was cut off. The only woman who lived there besides Igor left the settlement. Since then he has lived alone in Kyubume amidst the abandoned, slowly decaying blocks of houses. The next village is about 150 kilometres away. That‘s why Igor supplies himself with what nature offers him. „When I die, I want to be buried here. Because I belong to my home, my rivers, my forests, that’s my life.“

Our photo essay "Road of Kolyma" was published in M magazine of Le Monde as an 8-page portfolio. I worked on this project together with in February 2020. Thank you,!

For “Road of Kolyma“ we travelled for one month in winter 2020 on the Kolyma Highway from Yakutsk to Magadan. Our photo essay interweaves the history of the road with the living conditions of today‘s inhabitants and tells of life and survival in the inhospitable expanse of Russia‘s Far East.

This project was supported by VG Bildkunst.
