처음 자자의 "버스 안에서"를 듣된 건 예전에 커버했던 "초대"을 통해서였어요. 노래를 처음 들었을 때, 제가 어린 시절에 듣던 음악과 너무 비슷해서 정말 놀랐어요! 90년대와 2000년대 네덜란드에서는 이런 유로댄스 스타일의 음악이 정말 흔했거든요. 한국에서도 이런 스타일이 인기가 있었다는 건 이번에 처음 알게 됐어요!
I first heard Zaza "In the Bus" in the song discovery session as "Invitation", which I covered a while ago. I was really surprised to hear a song that sounded do similar to the music of my childhood. Growing up in the Netherlands in the 90s and 00s, this kind of Eurodance music was really common. I wasn't aware that this style was popular in Korea too back in the day!
원곡의 기본적인 구조는 최대한 유지하려고 했지만, 스타일은 꽤 많이 바뀌었어요. 제 버전은 록을 중심으로 스카, 일렉트로닉, 그리고 라틴 음악의 영향도 조금 들어가 있습니다. (유튜브 풀버전에서 더 잘 들으실 수 있어요 👀)
I tried keeping the main structure of the song the same, but the style is quite drastically different than the original. My version leans more towards rock with some ska, electronic and even Latin influences (you can hear that in the full version on YouTube 👀).
What do you think? For my next cover I will go back a bit further in time, I will take on a soul funk track many people requested.

I wanted to share something a little different from the remakes! During my last trip to Korea, I recorded some sounds around the city and turned them into a track.
주차장 출구 알람 소리는 매일 듣지만 사실 크게 신경 쓰지 않는 그런 소리죠. 그런데 그 소리를 듣다 보니 바로 그 위에 첫 두 개의 코드가 떠올랐어요. 그다음 피치를 조정하고 여러 레이어를 쌓다 보니 어느새 곡이 되어 있더라고요.
This one’s from a parking lot exit alarm, the kind you hear every day without really thinking about it. When I noticed it, I immediately imagined those first two chords over it. I started adjusting the pitch, layering things on top, and it turned into a song.

I love the sweet city pop feeling, the soft vocal melody from the verses and how it’s contrasted by the strong chorus that takes a bit more of a dramatic turn.
달콤한 시티팝 특유의 감성과 부드러운 보컬 멜로디, 그리고 드라마틱하게 터지는 후렴구와의 대비가 이 곡의 가장 큰 매력이라고 생각해요.
I added an intro melody with a whimsical vocal synth that I made from my own voice. The song has such a great arrangement already that I felt I don’t need to make many big changes to make it feel like a modern track.

Songolmae is one of the first older bands I got to know when I started learning about retro Korean music. “A Chance Encounter” was really got me hooked, I still think that’s an incredible disco banger. I started digging into their discography further a few months ago and stumbled upon “Yeouido Plaza”. The catchy electronic melody is completely up my alley, I instantly knew I had to remake this track.

I have been told it is a huge song in South-Korea, but I have personally only known it since mid January. I was amazed that this song is almost thirty years old, because it sounds like much newer than that. The vibe and production are really ahead of its time.
사실 이 곡을 지난 1월 처음 듣게 되었는데요 (추천해주신 팔로워님 감사합니다!), 28년 전 작업물이라는 사실이 믿기지 않을 만큼 너무나도 세련된 미니멀한 구성과 특유의 오리엔탈적인 무드가 정말 시대를 앞서간 노래라고 생각해요.
Getting the vocals correct was harder than the other previous songs I remade. It was a combination of specific pronunciations and the general and attitude that was tough for me get right. Of course it's impossible to parallel Uhm Jung Wha's singing, but I hope I did a good job.
The original arrangement is really strong and simple, but I couldn't help expanding it a bit. I'm especially happy what I did after the chorus. What do you think?

When I heard the song a few years ago, I was so amazed I started my search for more old Korean songs for the first time! In my version of "어느새" I took a reggae drum rhythm as the basis and built the remake around that groove. The signing style remains very similar to the original as it fit my voice well. All the other instrumentation is pretty different, but the original arrangement still shines through 💫
