In Issue 07, Matt writes about what happens when sharing a photograph sends a thousand people to a place that can’t hold them, and what we owe the places we love enough to photograph.
He’s not pointing fingers. He’s asking a harder question: what do we lose when discovery is replaced by coordinates?
The first image here is Ice Lake Basin in Colorado. Matt was alone there in 2013. By 2016 the trailhead filled before sunrise. Lines formed along the fragile lakefront. The image didn’t change. The place did.
The other two he found by wandering. No pins. No platforms. Just time and stubbornness and a willingness to get it wrong first.
We’re not tagging these locations. Read the article and you’ll understand why.

Mount Tasman (Te Horokōau), New Zealand's second-highest peak at 11,473 feet, rises above the glaciated ridgelines of the Southern Alps in Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park. To its right, the jagged serrated ridge of Silberhorn traces Tasman's southern approach, one of the finest ice climbing routes in the country. Shot at 720nm infrared, the snowfields go luminous while the rock faces deepen into near-black, giving the scene a structural clarity that visible light tends to obscure. The Southern Alps are still actively rising along the Alpine Fault.
The Colorado Way came together from my 2023 thru-hike of the Colorado Trail and my time on Colorado's 100 highest peaks. Writing the essays, sequencing the images, watching the layout evolve from a spreadsheet into something you can actually feel the weight of: that process is hard to put into words, but deeply satisfying in a way that posting a single image never quite is.
Seeing the first copies arrive and knowing they were headed out to people who care about these landscapes the same way I do: that's the part that makes the whole thing worth it.
I've included sample images from inside the book, here. Thank you to everyone who made this dream a reality!
Of course, I'm also madly in love with the absolutely blissful time I get to spend with some of my favorite people - other nature photographers who I now call some of my best friends. This week I'll be busy making my arrangements to make my annual trip and off I go to see what kind of trouble I can get into.
Here's to fall! 🍻
