March 22, 7 year old Omen joined Mattie’s Place from a Canadian shelter.
⚕️ MARCH 24TH, he went in for his BOAS surgery, had a dental with 20 teeth removed and had his cryptorchid neuter:
🟩 COST: $4481.61
⚕️ APRIL 16th, he went in for a recheck and a lump was discovered that wasn’t there for his surgery, on his lower left lip and attached to his canine tooth tissue. A sample was sent out and returned as a high-grade, aggressive mast cell tumour.
🟩 COST: $500
⚕️ APRIL 29, Omen was in for surgery to remove the tumour from his lip. He also had an additional 5 teeth removed in the near vicinity of the tumour to get as much tissue as possible to get clear margins.
They also retrieved cells from his lymph nodes, spleen and kidney to see if any of the cancer had spread, since it’s such an aggressive cancer.
🟩 COST: $3,187.22
✅ The very good news is that there was no evidence of spread to the lymph nodes, liver, or spleen based on the samples we submitted. This is an important and reassuring finding.
⚕️ APRIL 29TH (took 1 month for results), I had a much deeper dive completed on his mass; Prognostic Panel which is a multi-marker laboratory test that analyzes genes, proteins, or mutations—to estimate the likely course, aggressiveness, and recurrence risk of a patient’s cancer. It also allows me to know which chemotherapy his cancer will best respond to.

Omen will begin chemotherapy. He sees Oncology at Toronto Veterinary Emergency Hospital - TVEH on June 10th, but they are working on getting him in sooner.

Every other Saturday, Mattie’s Place picks up pet food from our regular pet store locations and delivers the pet food to our building captains, in specific buildings in the east end of Toronto, that have pet parents in need of added support.
Our building captains distribute the food for Mattie’s Place that our volunteer drivers drop off.
With gas prices increasing and summer upon us, we are looking for 1 or 2 volunteers to add to our driving roster, specifically for the pet food bank.
Eduardo manages the initiative for Mattie’s Place, supported by Heidi, so you have long time volunteers in place to help you get started and support you along the way.
Each driver picks up one time per month, on your own or with an additional driver, if you prefer, splitting store pickups. If we add 2 new drivers, then each driver would pickup pet food every 6 weeks.
We have a schedule made up for the year so everyone knows well in advance what their driving days are.

Phat Tom joined Mattie’s Place 2 months ago today. A senior boy, gentle and kind.
Lived with his family his entire life, then they were suddenly allergic to him so they surrendered him to a Canadian shelter.
Sadly declawed, sometime in life. He had quite a rotting mouth and was overweight at 20 pounds.
In 2 months he had 8 vet appointments with 1 resulting in hospitalization.
We got his vetting up to date, his dental removing 12 teeth, then he stopped eating so took quite a bit of medical attention, then he had an abscess under his chin that required draining and finally he needed an echocardiogram for heart issues.
It’s been an unexpected medical journey with Phat Tom, but he made it through, including losing 4 pounds, which has him being so much more agile, leaping up to tall window sills to bird watch!

Phat Tom has officially been adopted! Phat Tom is living a luxury life in his 2 story Toronto condo so he can keep up with some daily stair climbing exercise. He also has floor to ceiling windows to bird watch from the comfort of anywhere. And he has a doting Dad that just wants to pamper this great cat as he is most deserving of this charmed life he’s been given.
I’m thankful this story has a happy ending and the final rescue chapter is written for Phat Tom. He can now ride off into the sunset and begin so many new chapters and adventures with his Dad!

Snoop is the brother of Fish and Chips. Mattie’s Place welcomed Fish and Chips. Moxie, another sibling, joined Project Paws Dog Rescue and is also still available for adoption. And Snoop joined Hank’s Haven Rescue Foundation.
Snoop carries some trauma with him from life before rescue and he can get overwhelmed easily and when he does he begins to be reactive to things around him. He will air bite and can also bite a handler if in the vicinity of his panic.
This has made finding a foster or an adopter impossible for Hank’s Haven Rescue Foundation. He is currently in Nicole’s home but this is absolutely not a good environment for him as it’s a busy home with various fosters and boarding dogs.
Snoop needs out and fast for his own mental health.

Hell ya we got plans! Mattie’s Place dogs and Bruno Mars kinda plans!!
Yesterday afternoon, we got to hang out backstage with the amazing Bruno Mars tour team and Live Nation Ontario support.
Captain, Calypso & Buddy were representing rescue dogs today and bringing many smiles and cuddles to some phenomenal humans.
Bruno himself asked if he could run off with Captain to his plane, he was so smitten with the good boy!
Well done kids. Well done indeed.
I just love these back stage events. They are so chill and calm and everyone is so respectful of the dogs and the experience is always amazing for the pets and the many people stopping by for hello’s.

Today, Mattie’s Place was invited backstage again, for our 1st event in 2026. A quickie puppy puddle cuddle with Calypso, Captain & Sailor.
We love these events and the joy it brings artists, bands, touring crews & support teams when they get to have some cuddle time with amazing canine & feline friends from Mattie’s Place.
Today, we got to spend 1 hour with Hayley Williams who cuddled, loved on and even got puppy pee’d on (she was so graceful about it) with this adorable puppy trio.
Hayley was incredibly kind, taking the time to just chat about dogs and rescue and everything compassion for animals. Her and the band took the time to learn about pets in Ontario and shared their own stories about the pets they love so much in their life.
I’ve done many of these events over the years and I have to say, Hayley & crew were the most down to earth and have a true compassion & love for pets in need.
Really and truly enjoyed this 1 hour spent this afternoon.
Thank you Live Nation Ontario for this gift you give to artists and pets. I appreciate each of you, so much.
