I put down a saturated wash and play with it a bit, adding more paint around the edges of the skull. I'm thinking about the composition of the brush strokes even though they look messy... Painting outside the lines is freaking my 7yo out by the way!

I use a watery brush to lighten areas and also a dry brush to lift paint off the page

I add saturated paint for shadow details

Finally I ink.
