Sure, the Reef is pretty. But thereās so much more to it than that.
A Master Reef Guide helps you see the interesting stuff youād normally swim straight past, explains all the weird and wonderful things underwater, keeps you safe, and answers the random questions you didnāt know you had.
By the end of the day, they donāt just want you saying āthat was beautifulā, they want you leaving with a real love for the Reef too.

Spotted by Master Reef Guide Lisa at the marina, this is a huge nudibranch from the genus Melibe (could be Melibe japonica). Melibe species are some of the largest nudibranchs in the world, growing up to 30 cm in Indo-Pacific waters.
When they arenāt swimming, they usually spend their time crawling over the substrate using a massive, expandable oral hood (like a gelatinous fishing net) to sweep for small crustaceans. Catching one mid-water, free swimming, is an incredible sight.
A great example of why itās always worthwhile exploring marinas for wildlife, they make incredible hubs of life and you never know what you may see.

This young Manta ray is slowly becoming a local legend around the Lady Musgrave Lagoon. Frequently passing by the pontoon sheās named after āHQā, and is thought to maybe have been born nearbyā
The crew and Master Reef Guide Eamonn who filmed this will be keeping track of her growth and seeing if she hangs around and calls this area home.
Usually seen first thing in the morning cruising by to wave her wings and say hello š. These Mantas are born with a wingspan of around 1.5 metres, looking like miniature adults. Super cute š

If you see someone in a bright yellow rashie out on the Great Barrier Reef, chances are youāve found a Master Reef Guide š
The yellow tops arenāt just for looks either. They were specifically designed to be easy to spot in the water, so whether you need a hand, want to join a guided snorkel tour, or just have a reef question, head towards the yellow and look out for the iconic āMaster Reef Guideā on the back.
Out of the water, the yellow rashies disappear and the Guides swap back into their blue uniforms, continuing their work onboard, on islands and across the reef.
Noticing these uniforms might just lead you to the best part of your day and get you smiling too.

A lot of your Great Barrier Reef experience comes down to freedom. Freedom to choose whether you want to snorkel or dive, stay close to the boat or shore, or even just decide which direction you want to head in.
But even with all that freedom, itās important to listen to the safety briefing. Theyāll let you know where itās safe to go, and on top of that, theyāll usually point out where the best spots are too.
Still unsure? Just ask a Master Reef Guide before you set off, or let them lead the way.
Enjoy your snorkel! š¤æ
