Vivant et travaillant dans sa ville natale à Pietrasanta, Massimiliano Pelleti (né en 1975) a depuis toujours, eu un attrait particulier pour le travail du marbre. Il découvre l’artisanat traditionnel et les premières techniques de taille directe auprès de son grand- père, qui l’initie à cet art au sein de l’atelier familial.
Diplômé en philosophie de l’université de Pise, sa carrière s’accélère. En 2006, il remporte la douzième édition de la Biennale des jeunes artistes d’Europe et du bassin Méditerranéen. S’ensuit une longue série d’expositions collectives et personnelles, tant en Italie qu’à l’étranger. Il a notamment participé à la Biennale d’Alexandrie en Égypte ainsi qu’au pavillon italien de la 54e Biennale de Venise.
Le travail virtuose de l’artiste combine le classicisme de la statuaire antique aux lignes pures et l’aspérité de la matière brute, qu’il met en exergue. Il révèle la beauté du bloc de pierre minutieusement choisi, et joue avec les textures. Il travaille notamment des géodes d’onyx blanc ou rose, de quartz, ou de marbre. C’est ainsi que le lissé des visages antiques côtoie la nature primaire du matériau, nouvellement révélée...
Aujourd’hui, son travail gagne l’espace muséal avec des expositions à la Villa Madre à Gênes, à l’abbaye de San Zeno à Pise, au temple d’Ha- drien à Rome, au Castel S. Elmo à Naples, au musée Pecci à Prato...
