I will tell you that hurt people go on to hurt more people. There is an intrinsic drive to make others feel our pain. I know because Iāve tried to do that, too.
Or. Maybe some people are reptilians, lacking basic empathy. Also possible. Like ⦠what are those creatures in lord of the rings? Orcs? They donāt care. Just obeying orders!
Please, as much as you can - we have to fight these atrocities against our friends + neighbors and stay rooted - sleep, eat, cry, talk to your loved ones.
I saw an awesome action today - peeps buying and returning ONE container of SALT (the only thing in their cart) at Targets. Line out the door. (What does salt do? Extra cred to type in the comments). Cuz corporations (money) talks. Return the salt. Fight ice with ice.
And!
The sun, moon, and stars shine indiscriminately on all beings ⦠and the spring will come!
⦠but holy shit we are in a collective dark night of the soul. The terror is unimaginable.
Again, yes to love and light but not Pollyanna-ing here. Iāve lived through a few things - and also been blamed and dismissed as either asking for it or being an idiot for both being raped as well as being carjacked.
We have to fight for the peace and well being of all beings and our collective human decency. I canāt believe itās happening here but yet again, Prince knew the revolution would happen in Minneapolis (please come back!)
Hereās me 2 weeks ago in Puerto Morelos when I learned Renee Nicole Good was murdered 1.5 miles from my home. Also I know a crying white woman can do a world of harm. And also crying ⦠is healthy release ⦠in the face of injustice ⦠in the truth of the moment ā¦
(Side note, sooooo oddly the day before - Tara mentioned that her mom was gonna name her āReneeā and I told her I had always wished my name was āNicoleā when I was in junior high. š¤Æ
Renee Nicole, rest in peace and power. You are one Good Fukkin Bish.
Our state is home to the pristine Boundary Waters Wilderness:
4.3 million acres of beauty. 1,100 lakes in this region.
20% of the fresh water in National Forest system is within Superior National Forest. I went there with my church confirmation group in 8th grade w/ wonderful Methodist Pastor Cooper Wiggen (who also brought our 8th grade crew out of Princeton to a soup kitchen in Minneapolis to offer selfless service to the community. Life changing).
I went there with the outdoor club at UMD and felt the power and wonder of nature, canoeing for days in the October winds and sunshine. Experienced my own fear, strength, and awe at these stunning waterways.
Visited the edges of these lands at wonderful lodges, tents, and cabins outside of Grand Marais and Ely over the years. There is nothing like the quiet beauty. It is so precious.
And our state is being threatened not only by roving masked and armed federal agents terrorizing our communities but also by a bill that is getting voted on - like NOW - (Shame on you Pete Stauber) that would strip protections for this critical habitat for years to come and allow toxic, polluting copper nickel mining to take place in this sacred place.
Via Save the BWCA:
Congress has introduced a resolution to overturn the 20-year mining ban in the Boundary Waters watershed.
This is urgent. If passed, it would erase current protections, reopen the door to sulfide-ore copper mining near the Boundary Waters, and block future administrations from using the same safeguards. Congress is required to vote within 60 days.
We donāt have time to waste. Contact Congress now.

Beloved New Friends!
Thank you for sharing 20-ish hours with me studying the transformational qualities of sound at SvƤlja Whole-Being in Duluth. Profoundly grateful for having shared time with you to explore this topic so dear to my heart!
-8 degrees this morning, greeted upon opening my eyes by my dear friend Sarah Brokkeās painting of a woman floating in deep blue waters & lotus flowers. The worldās largest body of fresh water ~ Lake Superior - just down the hill, billowing with āsea smokeā (was informed that the lake āsmokesā when the air is 40 degrees colder than the water! Brrr)!
In our training, we explored the power of sound with voice, mantra, listening, thinking, speaking.
How sound, words, and our voices can both heal and hurt.
From ultrasound technology to sonar weaponry ⦠to ancient Sanskrit mantras for peace to the capacity to gossip, shame spiral, and bully.
Exactly one year ago, a break up threw me into huge inner turmoil - canāt even believe how toxic I became.
Wanted so badly for the pain I felt inside to be felt outside of me ā¦
And this very voice that sings mantras for peace also can say hurtful, angry words. Reflection of the pain/shame inside.
And thatās the old adage, āHurt people hurt people.ā Iām sorry for anyone I dragged down into it with me.
Shared this with our students yesterday morning - that I have SO much work to do, constantly making mistakes.
But I really want to use my voice for good. And I practice, heartfully.
We fall into confusion and we climb back up. Mantras can help ⦠carry us across.
Weirdly helps to understand what is happening in our country. The hate, the bullying ⦠it comes from within.
Self loathing. Wounds festering, infected. Retribution, greed ⦠obeying orders (shudder). Some people want other people to feel their pain & powerlessness. And now, many of them are getting to exert power.
Bolstered by the singing in the streets; the whistles and marching bands and songs of resistance. May we harness our voices + intentions for good.
May those of us stuck in the spiral of fear & anger - may we redirect our focus. Sing + pray. May we do one small action NOW to create positive change.
Duluth
Duluth!
Canāt wait to be with you
at SvƤlja Whole-Being
Saturday + Sunday

All eyes on Minneapolis, PLEASE
What happened last night in North Minneapolis is beyond shameful
aka reprehensibly Fād.
ICE agents shot a man in the leg going home to his pregnant wife and children. Federal agents shouldnāt just SHOOT a person?!!
Later, a man brought his kids to their van (one of them a 6 month old baby) to get away from the tear gas and flash bangs and sirens and armed militia in front of his home in the middle of the night while they are just trying to sleep to wake up for school and work āā well, these federal agents threw tear gas and flash bombs at his van, even as they saw them trying to leave - him and a bunch of kiddos - he had to evacuate the van full of TEAR GAS and his 6 mo couldnāt breathe, and waited for an ambulance that was delayed cuz the street was blocked by abandoned ICE cars
And a freaking reporter asks āwere you protesting?ā Heās like NO, I LIVE HERE!
Shame!!!
Can you imagine the fear and chaos of these moments??!! For why?????
Terrorizing people for NO REASON!!!!!
If you value human life out there? Children? Babies? Anyone? Hello????!!!!
FOR NO REASON
No probable cause
No provocation
No obstruction
JUST FLEEING WITH HIS KIDS FROM HIS OWN HOUSE FOR THEIR SAFETY
SHAME
It is a disgrace
Do not close your eyes
The world is on fire
It does not have to be
We are better than this
WE JUST WANT TO LIVE OUR LIVES
GO TO WORK
GO TO SCHOOL
GET GROCERIES
BE WITH FRIENDS AND FAMILY
Is that too much to ask????
Hello dears
Unbelievably thrilled
to share this news with you today!
So grateful to announce š£
Iāve been awarded an Artist in Residency grant
at the Helene Wurlitzer Foundation of New Mexico
~ in beloved Taos ~
starting mid September thru December!
It is a TRUE GIFT FROM THE UNIVERSE.
Honestly, I am baffled ā¦
still having quite a time to process
and integrate the news!
Was awarded awhile ago,
however wasnāt sure if I could accept
due to Lyme and life ā¦
However, ohhhh,
what a Dream come True!
The vision of Helene Wurlitzer was - and is - to offer artists a place to rest, feel into their own rhythms, allow time to process and create from a space of ⦠spaciousness and rejuvenation without the external pressures of the world and daily lives and routines.
The Foundationās mission is to āSupport the artist and the creative processā and serves as a haven for visual artists, literary artists and music composers.
The mystical magical vortex of Taos amplifies this creative energy. First learned of Taos in the early 2000ās through writer Natalie Goldberg (Writing Down the Bones, Long Quiet Highway) and have visited as often as possible!
This award is a strange and mysterious gift from the universe, and couldnāt come at the more perfect time, in my āHermit Year.ā
Have gone to Taos to heal ~ from divorce, from the carjacking, from the weight of the world in general. I know many of you love it and feel it there, too & grateful to have traveled with some of you there ⦠also serendipitous to get this award cuz I had to cancel co-hosting the Ghost Ranch retreat with Sarah this year because of Lyme. š„¹
This is, humbly, my 2nd Artist Residency at the Wurlitzer (first was 2017) and much of āThe World is Your Loverā was conceived there. Met incredible artists and still feel inspired from that time.
Thank you, Helene Wurlitzer (rest in peace) and huge gratitude to the residency board for this opportunity. Truly cannot wait to return š

āMinnesota native Mary Bue has carved a unique space within the music scene, using her art for healing. Bueās understanding of the emotional relationship between lyrics and the music has led her to create an innovative sound.
āHer latest album āThe Wildness of Living & Dying,ā to be released Sunday, explores humanity, love, healing and trauma.
āThis album, written from 2020 to 2023, is inspired by events in Minneapolis and the world ā as well as a traumatic carjacking Bue experienced.
āBue says the album captures the spectrum of good and bad possibilities every day holds.
āWe never know what can happen in a day, life, death, births, sickness, accidents, love,ā she said. āIt is about the awe of being alive and the preciousness of the moment and how wild a day can be, how it can turn, how we can turn emotionally on a dime.ā
