In deze serie breng ik mensen in beeld die zelf naar Nederland zijn gemigreerd en daarmee de eerste generatie binnen hun familie in Nederland vormen. Ik portretteer mensen met achtergronden in onder andere Oeigoerse, Indonesische, Chinese, Chileense, Soedanese, Oekraïense, Vietnamese, Iraanse en Libanese gemeenschappen.
De portretten en verhalen geven inzicht in hun leven in het land van herkomst, de omstandigheden rondom hun vertrek en hun ervaringen na aankomst in Nederland, momenten die vaak een keerpunt in hun leven markeren.

Het is officieel, baby! Mijn solo-expositie komt eraan dit jaar, op de nieuwe locatie van. Een moment om mijn periode als Fotograaf der Nederlanden af te sluiten. Ik kan niet wachten om al mijn nieuwe werk met jullie te delen.
Dit jaar vier ik ook mijn 10-jarig jubileum als fotograaf. In de laatste slide zie je een van de allereerste foto’s die ik ooit maakte, toen ik nog geen idee had waar deze reis me zou brengen. Gewoon een jongen met een camera.

Voor mij is fotografie een ontmoeting, geen eenrichtingsverkeer. Iets wat we samen maken. Ik werk met ervaringen als vertrekpunt voor door mij geënsceneerde beelden en verhaallijnen. Deelnemers figureren in deze beelden en scènes. Ervaring is niet nodig.
De opnames vinden plaats verspreid over het komende half jaar.
Het project is bedoeld voor publicatie en mogelijk voor een tentoonstelling. Ik werk zorgvuldig en met respect voor iedereen die meedoet. Dit project richt zich bewust op Nederlanders van kleur als aanvullend perspectief op het Nederlandse zelfbeeld.
Voel je ruimte om hier onderdeel van te zijn, ook als we elkaar al kennen, of ken je iemand voor wie dit klopt, dan hoor ik graag van je. Je kunt me bereiken via een DM.

Ik ben daar dankbaar voor, al is dankbaarheid een groot woord voor iets wat vooral vraagt om aandacht.
Het Rijksmuseum is de plek waar Nederland besluit wat het wil bewaren. Wat daar hangt of ligt, wordt geschiedenis genoemd. Wat ontbreekt, wordt vaak pas later gemist.
Dat het museum hedendaags werk van een levende fotograaf aankoopt, gebeurt zelden. Meestal wacht men tot de tijd zijn werk heeft gedaan. Tot mensen overleden zijn, beelden zijn afgekoeld en niemand er nog echt last van heeft. Dat deze serie nu wordt opgenomen, zegt iets over het moment waarin we leven en misschien ook over wat te lang buiten beeld is gebleven.
We leven in een tijd waarin beelden zich sneller aandienen dan ze worden bekeken. Zichtbaarheid is geen garantie voor begrip.
Intimacy is niet gemaakt voor haast. De foto’s tonen eerste generatie migranten die hun leven in Nederland hebben opgebouwd. Mensen die zelden worden gezien buiten maatschappelijke thema’s om. In deze serie niet. Hier zijn ze gewoon aanwezig. Met elkaar. In hun huis. Soms hand in hand. Dat blijkt al uitzonderlijk genoeg.
Deze beelden voegen niets spectaculairs toe. Ze corrigeren hooguit iets. Ze laten zien wat er altijd al was, maar zelden werd vastgelegd. Misschien omdat liefde moeilijker te classificeren is dan gebrek.
Dat Intimacy nu deel uitmaakt van de collectie van het Rijksmuseum betekent niet dat de geschiedenis compleet is. Het betekent wel dat er iets is verschoven.
Het verandert wie wordt gezien en wie wordt herinnerd.
Ik dank alle geportretteerden en hun kinderen, het team van het en, dat de serie destijds publiceerde. Natuurlijk ook voor je ongekende steun.
Ik ben blij dat dit werk kan bijdragen aan het historische beeld van Nederland.

De ambtsperiode van Marwan Magroun, Fotograaf des Vaderlands sinds 2022, is met twee jaar verlengd. Als zesde Fotograaf des Vaderlands blijft hij tot 2026 een belangrijke ambassadeur voor de Nederlandse fotografie. Magroun heeft de afgelopen jaren indruk gemaakt met zijn unieke blik op maatschappelijke thema’s zoals identiteit en representatie.
Zijn afsluitende tentoonstelling wordt in 2026 op grootse wijze gepresenteerd in het nieuwe Nederlands Fotomuseum, dat volgend jaar verhuist naar Pakhuis Santos in Rotterdam. Hier zal zijn werk in een moderne omgeving schitteren. Daarnaast werkt Magroun aan een speciale opdracht voor het Nederlands Fotomuseum, die wordt onthuld tijdens de openingsperiode van de nieuwe locatie.

Over the years, I watched my mom flourish, especially now that she spends most of her time back in Tunisia, reconnecting with her brothers and sisters. It brings me so much joy to see her so close with her sisters again, as if they were never apart. Seeing their bond reminds me of the power of sisterhood, and that’s why I made sure to capture those moments of them together celebrating their enduring love and connection.
