2016 was a pretty epic year!
• was a year where I joined a running+brunch club and went on to have an EPIC year of running, completing Paris and Yorkshire marathons, and then knocking out an insane number of other races and events throughout the year 🏃🏻
• I was early in my freelancing days but also working on building my own start-up 🚀
• It was a year where I rediscovered old hobbies - getting back into drawing and I got a piano and started re-learning that too (I’d stopped when I was about 17!) 🎹
• I went to Boston 🇺🇸 and later in the year was invited on an incredible trip with the running club to Johannesburg 🇿🇦, where we even got to go on safari! 🐘
• It was also a year of continually trying out early wireless earbuds, many of which were terrible 😂 - until later in the year Apple changed everything with the Airpods!
• it was the year my Instagram account first started growing. I realised that my tech-related photos always got way more attention that anything else, and that’s how things got to where they are today! Who was here when I still had the glass desk?? Also maybe flatlays should become a thing again in 2026?! haha! 📸

After the last 2 years of hype-ware (visionOS and Apple “Intelligence” 🙄) some of which didn’t even get released(!) I’m actually looking forward to something hopefully a bit more down to earth this year.
Can’t really say I’m massively excited about anything that’s been rumoured (iOS getting a lick of paint 🤷🏻♂️, changing release numbers 🤷🏻♂️, preinstalled games ❌) … but let’s see what technical changes come in under the radar. Will be interesting to see what improvements are made to Xcode because in terms of “AI” it just feels so far behind… 😓
What I *am* excited about however, is watching the keynote from an NSLondon viewing party! Will share more about that tomorrow 😜 (unless I forget to take photos lol)

Thought the end was in sight today for a complicated change I’ve been working on for the last week or so… but in the end a bunch of other people’s changes meant constant conflict resolving and now somehow my changes aren’t working 😂 … so that’s going to have to wait til tomorrow lol.

This week has felt long… I’ve been helping out another squad in my client’s iOS team to resolve a memory issue with their app. Although I proposed and PoC’d a fix about 2 weeks ago, it’s taken ages for the various people involved to coordinate getting things moving. In the end I ended up pretty much doing everything myself 🤦🏻♂️ which was great for kudos but annoying because this change now has a knock-on impact on the thing I’m supposed to be working on 😂 … so I kinda just doubled my workload. Genius.
After copious amounts of caffeine, who wants to join me for a fridaydevdrink?!

2023 wasn’t a great year for my Instagram feed, but I’m looking to change that in 2024, so thought I’d kick things off by (re-)introducing myself. 😊
So, first off, yes my name is John(!!) 🤣 but literally everyone gets it wrong because of my IG handle (which is also my company name!). I even made a “my name is not Martin” t-shirt once! 😂
I’m a freelance iOS developer but I’ve been coding pretty much my entire life so have worked on lots of different things in the past (Delphi, php, Java, oracle, front/backend, fullstack, technical architecture…)
I only code native apps in Swift (I have no interest in cross-platform at this stage, and niching has been beneficial 💸)
I live (alone 🥲) in London, and work mainly from home or WeWork.
My content is focused around life as a developer/freelancer, Apple tech/updates, and occasional tips. I’m not here to teach you how to code 😅 there are plenty of other people who can do that better than I can!

First of all - I wouldn't recommend paying for anything if you are just starting. You might end up hating the course, or find it doesn't resonate for you, or that it wasn't at the appropriate level, or that iOS sucks, or life gets in the way, or.... any number of reasons!

Instead, I strongly recommend starting with free resources - and there are a TON of them out there! Get started for free, build momentum, figure out what style of learning suits you best, and then look at paid courses or books as necessary to build on what you've started. 🚀

I'm often amazed that so many people start thinking about learning iOS development but, for example, don't even look at the Swift Programming Guide or any of the resources that Apple provides for free! 🤷🏻♂️

There are some resources that are always recommended, and I've included a few of them here, but I've also tried to include some less-obvious ones, as well as things that are useful even if you're an experienced iOS developer looking to level-up your skills or learn a few tricks. 😉

Ok, here’s something a bit different. 🙈 A while back I asked on my story if any of you would be interested in me sharing my Xcode theme, which I’ve been using and enjoying for a while now, and lots of you said yes so - here it is! (Finally 😂)

Who says VSCode has to have all the fun?! 😂 Xcode doesn’t have as many customisation options or a user-friendly way to discover and install themes, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be done. 😅

Mine is a dark theme somewhere in-between the default “dusk” and “midnight” options. I’ve changed up quite a few other elements to make it more interesting and it’s been pretty easy on the eye in my experience. 😊
