Landing on a Toe vs Landing on a Heel

Which one is better?

(You already know what I’m going to say, don’t you?)

WHICHEVER ONE YOU’RE MOST COMFORTABLE WITH!

That said…

Theoretically, landing on a heel is “best.”

It’s all about balance—and the opportunity for a stronger balance is greater from a heel.

Unfortunately for many athletes, this requires you to be much more patient. And in this opportunity to be patient for the ball, the majority of us rush ahead of the system before it’s ready. Then, the whole thing breaks down.

Landing on a toe is easier.

Landing on the heel, further strengthens the *3 wind + 3 turn* rhythm of a FOUR turn throw.

IMO, if you can, try to make it work. However, not at the expense of being comfortable in the ring. For instance, don’t keep going back and forth in the middle of a season.

Uncertainty of movement kills more seasons than not.

SIDE NOTE: You can also try landing *flat* footed.

The speculative difference between the two brings up similar conversations as to whether spin or glide [used to be] best in major championships (this particular convo is all but concluded, I reckon lol).

As with just about every choice that can be made as it relates to movement, one can obviously throw far either way. See the videos above.

The choice is yours to make.

Between you and me, I personally wish I stuck with it… 😒

Hindsight, amiright

*How to “relax” into the throw in 3 and 4*

From the Suggestion 📦

This is a good topic as it most commonly comes up as an athlete improves their entry and/or first two turns.

What does relaxing into 3 and 4 mean?

First, let’s start with what it doesn’t mean. The word ‘relax’ isn’t meant to convey a looseness. Or a loss of tension.

It loosely means doing less as the ball creates more force the closer you get to release (hence, Do Nothing).

The key is maintaining your connection with the hammer, while the velocity of the ball increases. The typical instinct in athletes is to tighten in 3 and 4 in reaction to the ball moving faster. This can be learned.

You need to be with it. Not ahead. Not behind. Easier said than done, obviously.

The answer is being intentional with where the *hammer* is and being with it there.

Not where you want or think it should be.

Most issues in hammer arise from you attempting to put the hammer somewhere it isn’t meant to be or it doesn’t want to go.

Feel it. And ride it out.

*How* you do this is up to you—the one in the ring.

Anything you are cued to do brings with it effort. Effort brings the wrong kind of tension (a conversation for another day).

The ones who “relax” into 3 and 4 best, don’t do it by trying. They do it by doing less and less each successive turn.

Relaxing into 3 and 4 is the ONLY way to “grow” your orbit, thus maximizing your radius.

Thank you for your suggestions! If you have any more, keep a look out for the next time I ask in my story, or just DM me.
