What’s the rush with 13-year-olds?

Ryley and I had a great conversation the other day during our training session.

And one of the questions asked was, why rush a young players development.

At that age, the goal is not max strength or max intensity.
It’s building movement quality, coordination, and strength foundations so athletes can handle harder training later on.

When development gets rushed, it usually shows up years later as injuries or stalled progress.

Slow down early, build the base, and kids actually improve faster long term.

Simple does not mean easy.

This banded partner anti-rotation press and hold with step is a core exercise that forces you to resist movement while you are moving.

As one athlete steps out, band tension increases and tries to pull both partners out of position, requiring constant control, awareness, and adjustment.

This teaches the core to engage when needed and relax when appropriate, which is exactly what happens during battles on the ice.

The setup is simple, and the effectiveness comes down to intent and execution.

Lying Internal Hip Rotation

If your stride feels tight or restricted, internal hip rotation is often the missing piece.

This exercise helps restore hip motion, improve control through the joint, and set the foundation for a smoother, more efficient stride on the ice.

Train the range with control, not speed, and let the hips do the work.

Should you lift before a game?

Yes, absolutely.

I’ve been lifting before games for years, including 15 years ago when I played professionally in Germany.

Done correctly, lifting before a game primes the nervous system, it does not fatigue you.

The key is low volume, high intent.

Use a load you could normally do for five reps, perform only three reps, and cut your total sets in half.

Focus on lower body movements that wake the legs up, not exhaust them.

When done right, you step on the ice feeling faster, stronger, and more explosive.

Safe progressions are what protect athletes long term.

Skipping steps in off-ice development might look impressive early, but it usually shows up later as stalled progress, poor mechanics, or injury.

Plyometrics are powerful tools, but only when a child has earned them through strength, control, and movement quality first.

Build the foundation, respect the process, and don’t rush development.

That’s how athletes stay healthy and continue improving year after year.

4 stretches to instantly improve stride length.

If your stride feels short or restricted, your hips are usually the limiter, not your effort.

These four stretches open up the exact areas that allow you to get more length, better recovery, and smoother power on the ice.

1️⃣ Incline / Elevated Pigeon Stretch
2️⃣ Hip Flexor Stretch with Overhead Reach
3️⃣ Banded Hip Opener
4️⃣ Seated 90/90 Rotations

Use these consistently and you’ll feel more freedom through your hips and a cleaner, more efficient stride.

Always appreciate hearing feedback like this.

Working with Zach Whitecloud and seeing how preparation, consistency, and trust in the process show up on the ice is what this is all about.

The work is intentional, the standards are high, and the goal is always to be better prepared when it matters most.

Grateful for the trust and the work.

⚡ Most hockey players think tight hips mean they need more stretching… but the truth is, you need strength if you want real skating speed. 🧊🔥

This 90-90 hip strength drill is one of the best ways to unlock explosive power in your stride.

If your skating feels tight, slow, or restricted, start training your hips the way elite hockey players do — with controlled rotation, stability, and strength.

Here’s the progression:
1️⃣ 90-90 setup for stability
2️⃣ Lift, rotate, and tap heel-to-heel
3️⃣ Keep the toe pulled to your shin for maximum control

Do 7–10 reps per side and watch your skating speed improve fast.

If you’re serious about your hockey training, comment "Hips" and I'll send you my 20 min follow along video that will get your hips feeling better in no time!

⚡ How I’d Make Your 12-Year-Old Fast

Speed starts with a strong foundation, which helps the breaking system. Then we look to build the entire core because this helps with total body control and power transfer.

Once that is built, we add reactive work — exercises that teach the body to be explosive with minimal time on the ground.

That’s where the real speed comes from 👇

✅ Bounds (linear + lateral)
✅ Quick ground contacts
✅ Powerful hip extension

The less time your foot spends on the ground, the faster you move.

That’s how you build true game-speed for young athletes.
