If you are a female watercolour artist you might consider joining this organization, which has two annual exhibitions, this one and another which is open to all women.
These flowers are daylilies or Hemerocallis. I love the peachy colours, so warm and delicious with various shades of pink and orange. As usual I created my own background but I incorporated the leaves in the photo, making some of them dominant and part of the foreground, and others just suggested and part of the background, with softer, undefined edges. I used cooler colours to compliment the warmth of the flowers, including my newest colour at the time, WN Turquoise Light, or DS Cobalt Teal Blue, which I combined with lime greens and cobalt blues. The light clearly comes from the left side and the coolest blues are on the right side, so that burst of light in the upper left just seems to light up the flowers and the painting. When painting only two flowers, which for some people is a no-no, I usually overlap them to create a single large form, and I like to use diagonals rather than have them just side-by-side. Diagonals are always more dynamic, and most of my paintings have some kind of diagonal composition, something I picked up from my early days studying Chinese Brush Painting. The title echoes the feeling of the painting. I always tell my students they should know what kind of mood they are trying to create, and keep each aspect of the painting in tune with that mood. I try to do that too!

Cardinal Clematis, watercolour, half-sheet. One of my more vibrant, fun ones. Every so often I just want to go a bit wild, and the intensity of the colour on the Clematis meant I had to go really dark to get a darker background. So I played around with salt. Salt forces the paint away from itself, and by adding it in bands, the salt gets trapped in between the layers, creating interesting patterns not unlike those found on some agates. You never know quite what you are going to get but I trust myself to be able to "rescue" something that goes off the tracks. I esp. liked the delicate patterns on the upper left corner, but I did play around with some of the other patterns afterwards. Because the center of interest, the white, tufty center of the flower, is so light and delicately painted, and everything else is so saturated and intense, the center really stands out. But the richness of those deep red petals also stands out in the petal on the lower right. Sometimes you just have to take a deep breath, trust your instincts, and go for it. This painting is sold and unfortunately I don’t have any prints. But I did scan it, so maybe I should make some!

Single Pink Peony III, watercolour, full sheet. Single peonies have an interesting cluster of central petals, usually white or yellow, and then outer petals of a different colour, in this case pink. I like the contrast. The warmth and strength of the center balances out the delicacy of the outer petals. In this painting I also emphasized the strength of the stalk holding up this rather heavy flower, by adding blues around it under the base of the flower. Peonies are very heavy flowers and rely on a single, strong stem to hold them upright. This combination of strength and delicacy, a strong vertical thrust which turns into a gentle outward flow of colourful petals creates a lovely circular flow as well as a feast of colours. The golden peony in the upper right background also picks up some of the golds and yellows of the pink peony's center. There are just enough cools in the mix to make the warm colours sing.

Pink Dahlia, watercolour, half-sheet. My daughter's favourite painting. It won a significant award in a major international exhibition of the Federation of Canadian Artists, called AIRS (Annual International Representational Show) and was in several other exhibitions. I'm saving it for my daughter but I do have press prints and giclee prints of it. I really wanted to capture the 3D effect of this flower, so I had to do a very careful drawing to get those petals coming straight at the viewer just right. Each petal also affects the light and shadow on the petals underneath it, so I had to be careful with my highlights and shadows. It reminded me a bit of a sea anemone, so I added the soft, bubbly background to give the painting another dimension, almost like the flower was an underwater creature. The background also added softness and coolness to a painting that was hot, hard-edged and dramatic. But isn't that just what Dahlias are?

Rhodo in the Light, watercolour, half-sheet. This was a neighbour's rhododendron, and I loved the little bits of red on the flower and the red-tinged buds. But of course what I really loved was the light streaming through the petals! It was basically a cluster of cream coloured flowers, but there were bits of pink, orange, yellow, gold and even a bit of violet and blue in the petals. And the buds just sang with reds and golds. I decided on a fairly simple, dark green background, somewhat muted in colour. However, there was a slightly distant flower in the background on the left side that I wanted to suggest with soft, wet-in-wet colour, but leave a bit fugitive, something to tease the viewer. So I painted that very wet and let the edges just blend into the background. Because the eye is drawn to the red buds in the upper right, I intensified the greens in the lower right to give it a bit more depth and ground it a bit more, with the supporting branch and a few leaves. I added a few bubbles there too, just for fun. I wanted the eye to come around and down after it was pulled to the top by the red buds. I always try to be mindful of the flow around the painting. This is one of my favorite paintings and its owned by a dear friend, but I do now have a giclee print of this image, plus inexpensive press prints, check out the Prints page of my website,

Golden Glow, watercolour, half-sheet. Golden deciduous azaleas. The blossoms come in clusters before the leaves come out on this 4-5' tall shrub. I love the wonderful variety of warm colours that are available in this shrub, and in this particular variety I love the giraffe-like pattern on the upper petal of each individual azalea flower. They bloom in the spring, and this one is just under a large lilac shrub which blooms at the same time. I chose a diagonal composition for its drama, and a simple dark blue background for contrast. The background also sweeps the eye down but brings it up again just in time! I had applied masking fluid with a toothpick on the tiny hairs, before I painted the background, and when I removed it I added tiny bits of yellow and green to give the hairs a bit of dimension and tone down their whiteness. Other than the giraffe pattern, the most challenging thing was getting all the values right in the various shades of yellow, gold and orange.

Fall Crocus, watercolour, half-sheet. Fall Crocus is the common name give to a flower that blooms in late September and October, I have some in bloom now. Its an autumnal colchicum, I’m not sure if it’s a bulb or a corm, but every fall it emerges from the ground in this delightful pink flower. In the spring, its rather large leaves appear. In this painting I wanted to show the contrast between the dying summer foliage and the emerging, spring-like beauty of this delicate flower. They cycle of life brings us beauty in every stage. The dark browns are unusual for me in a flower painting, but I think they are a good contrast to the clear, pinkish colour of the flower, and represent the contrast between the uplifting flowers of spring and the return of everything to the earth in autumn. The cycle of life brings us both up and down. I was especially fond of the large dying leaf on the lower right; the smaller leaf brings the eye around to the left and then up again as we complete the circle of life.

Dancing in the Light II, watercolour, full sheet. These are a variety of fuchsia, called marshmallow, and these flowers were suspended from hanging baskets at Butchart Gardens, with the light flooding down through the leaves. I was trying to capture the delicacy and transparency of the petals, and also the dappled light coming through the leaves. The petals were swaying slightly in the breeze, and I wanted to convey that bit of movement too. As usual, I painted the background first, wet-on-wet to keep it soft and blurry, leaving the flowers paper-white so as not to lose any of the light. After I was happy with the background, I painted the in-focus leaves and then the flowers. I used very light washes of Perm Rose, Cobalt Blue and New Gamboge yellow (the old white tubes of W&N) to build up the colour of the petals. I include a step sequence of how I painted Dancing in the Light II in my online course, more details can be found here: The main thing I wanted to convey was the overall lightness of being I felt when standing under these delicate, floating flowers. I do have giclee prints of both these fuchsia paintings, Dancing in the Light is a horizontal format and Dancing in the Light II is a vertical format. I also have a press print of the latter.
