Marlon Blackwell joined Brandan “BMIKE” Odums, Jonathan Tate, and Julie Kim for Building at the Fringe: Rehabilitation at the Urban Scale, a session from Our World in Design: Immortal Spaces, hosted by Michael Murphy at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, Georgia, on April 16.

The one-day symposium explored the spaces that make us human, the legacies we leave behind, and the future we want to build. Its conversations moved across public memory, authorship, urban life, prison reform, rehabilitation, palliative care, neuroarchitecture, cultural institutions, and the collaboration between artists and architects. Together, these sessions considered how architecture and design shape how we gather, remember, heal, disagree, and imagine more generous futures.

Within that larger framework, Marlon’s session examined how architecture, art, and design can engage the edges of cities, communities, and practice itself.

Marlon Blackwell, FAIA, wrote the foreword for the new book Out There: New Architecture Across America, “a critical survey of 50 architectural firms working across America’s regional cities and small towns.”

The volume looks closely at work made outside the usual centers of attention, where architecture is shaped by the particular conditions of place, culture, climate, and community from coast to coast.

Among the firms featured are Observation Studio, GOA / Gray Organschi Architecture, and Duvall Decker Architects, practices whose work reflects the depth, range, and regional intelligence of contemporary architecture across the country.

As Marlon writes in the foreword, “I am taken by how these masterful practices, some emerging, some well established, are all making architecture of the highest aspirations and being progressive in places that often are not. With a close reading of their own place and a disciplinary knowledge of the language of architecture, they toggle back and forth between the local, the global, and the universal.”

Congratulations to and all included in this important volume.

Now on view March 14 through July 3, 2026, at the American Academy of Arts and Letters in New York City: Articles of Distinction, an exhibition drawn from over a century of the Academy’s collection.

For the exhibition, current members were invited to select pieces from the archive and reflect on their meaning. Marlon Blackwell selected two works by architect John M. Johansen: Mummers Theater (The Stage Center Theater), 1970, and The Froth of Bubbles, 1988, a conference center proposal for the top of the World Trade Center.

Marlon recalls visiting Mummers Theater in Oklahoma City as a young man, describing it as “a rare beacon of delight, a strange, wonderful place.” He connects that same spirit to Johansen’s Froth of Bubbles, writing that the World Trade Center proposal remains “one of the most audacious acts of architectural optimism I’ve ever encountered, palpable and poetic.”

First envisioned in 1915 as a “treasure house of literary and artistic Americana,” the Academy’s collection reflects the creative lives, values, and legacies of its members across art, literature, music, architecture, and culture.

Last Friday was the much anticipated Steel Topping Off Ceremony for the UAMS Health Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine Hospital in Springdale, Arkansas!

The placement of the final steel marks the completion of the building’s structural frame and a transition into the next phase of construction. Set within a 30 acre landscape, the project is now fully legible on site, its scale, organization, and relationship to the surrounding terrain beginning to take hold.

For Marlon Blackwell Architects, this milestone reflects the coordination required to bring structure, systems, and experience into alignment. The building is taking shape as a place designed to support care, recovery, and performance with clarity and purpose.

Thankful for another successful collaboration with our partners, consultants, contractors, and especially to the UAMS team for their continued trust in our work.
Marlon Blackwell Architects is proud to congratulate our newest registered architect, Christian Willis!

The GOAT trophy has officially been passed, an ongoing studio tradition recognizing the newest registered architect and the dedication it takes to reach this milestone. Each transition celebrates not only an individual achievement, but a shared culture of persistence, growth, and commitment to the work.

Join us in celebrating on this accomplishment! Way to go 👏

Our latest exhibition is unveiled today at the Fay Jones School of Architecture and Design. The Unknown, The Unbuilt, and The Possible is on view until May 15th.

For this exhibition, we opened the archive and selected thirteen unbuilt projects by Marlon Blackwell Architects to share. Drawn from more than three decades of work, this curation brings to light a body of ideas, ambitions, and architectural investigations that continue to shape our practice. These drawings and models show that unrealized projects are not leftovers of practice. They are where architecture searches, tests, invents, and moves forward.

This exhibition offers a rare opportunity to shine a light on remarkable work that helped define new possibilities, even without being built. What remains unbuilt still matters. It carries ideas forward, reveals the discipline in motion, and helps shape what comes next.

“Cheers to the possible, live up to the promise.”
-MB

After 33 years, we join in celebrating Marlon Blackwell’s retirement from teaching at the University of Arkansas. His time at the Fay Jones School helped shape not only generations of students, but the character, ambition, and broader culture of the school itself. Through decades of balancing teaching and practice, he demonstrated that architecture is strengthened by the exchange between the academy and the world, between ideas and building, between rigor and optimism.

As Distinguished Professor of Architecture, E. Fay Jones Chair in Architecture, former head of the Department of Architecture, co-founder of the Mexico Summer Urban Studio, and longtime coordinator of the school’s lecture series, Marlon helped guide the school’s growth and broaden its reach and influence. His impact was never his alone. It was built through a shared culture of inquiry, generosity, and commitment alongside colleagues, students, and collaborators who helped shape the school’s trajectory over time.

In 2020, Marlon was recognized with two extraordinary honors: the AIA Gold Medal and SEC Professor of the Year. Together, these accolades reflect the rare depth of his contribution to both the discipline of architecture and the lives of those he taught.

We are deeply proud of Marlon and grateful for the example he has set as a teacher, mentor, colleague, leader, and architect. His legacy at the Fay Jones School will continue in the lives and work of his students, in the culture and trajectory of the school, and in the model he established for how teaching and practice can strengthen one another.

Here’s to all that was built in the classroom, and all that is still to come in the studio.
