One of the best thing to do in NZ is an overnight at Brewster Glacier 👀
🏔️ This is only 5 km one way, but also 1 300 m of elevation gain 🦵
🧊 The swim in the glacier terminal lake is a must!
⛺️ There’re 10ish tent spots around the lake, all very far from each other. We were on the weekend and there were still some spots left 🙌 no reservations needed, also free! Just keep in mind the “leave no trace” principles:)

Warm hat – wool or fleece to trap heat
Neck gaiter – protects face and neck from wind
🧥 Upper Body
Base layer (top) – moisture-wicking long-sleeve (merino wool is my fav)
Mid layer – insulating layer (fleece, down sweater, wool)
Outer shell / winter coat – windproof, waterproof
🧤 Hands & Arms
Winter gloves / mittens – waterproof and insulated
🩳 Lower Body
Base layer (bottom) – moisture-wicking
Insulating layer – fleece pants or puffy pants when really cold
Outer pants – snow pants (windproof, waterproof)
🧦 Feet & Ankles
Thermal socks – wool or synthetic (avoid cotton)
Boots – insulated, waterproof winter boots with good traction (Fubuki are my fav)

🌡️Always dry on LOW heat, and once it’s dry, give it another 20 minutes to reactivate the DWR (Durable Water Repellent) coating.
🚿A front-loading washer is best for washing outdoor gear… I just don’t have one 😅

Navigation 🧭
⌚️Save a GPS waypoint on your watch (or GPS) at the spot where you’ll leave a car, your finish point.
At the start on the opposite shore, “navigate” to that saved point using your Garmin (or equivalent).
🧭 Bring compasses as a backup! (Keep it warm for better use)
📞 There’s also cell coverage along the entire crossing 🙌
⛷️ For reference, our pace was between 3.5 and 5.5 km/h at a relaxed rhythm, easily doable in 2 days.
(Many people take 3 days if they start late on Day 1 and finish early on Day 3.)
Gear rentals:
• has everything you need for winter camping (in Montreal)
• rents skis and boots (in Saguenay)
⚠️ Watch out for “hot spots” where the ice is thinner or doesn’t freeze, especially near river mouths shown on the map 🗺️
Don’t forget your car key for the vehicle parked at the finish 🔑, ice screws to anchor your tent ⛺️, and a brush to clear frost off your gear!
