“A contrast of LIGHT & DARK”
Adding light and dark shades, gives the ‘illusion’ of depth, space, width and height.
An example if this would be someone with fine hair. By adding dimension this will allow the hair to look fuller, longer and interesting, rather than feeling ‘flat’.
When deciding how to place dimension ask your client these questions!⬇️
Q)How much depth do you want to see?
Q) What do you want to achieve with the ‘look’ of your hair?
Q)Do you want it to stand out or blend in?
Q) High contrast or low contrast?
Understanding dimension can keep your clients for life as it’s something that we as artists envision and then create!
This is because of how you place colours.
The hair itself hasn’t ‘changed’ as such. It’s what visually has been created.
A wave also lends itself well, as it brings the light to the front and the depth appears to be set back because of light and dark next to each other, creating the contrast.
We ‘see’ lighter colours first.. shall I tell you why? Who knows? 🙋🏼♀️
It’s all to do with how the eye sees colour🎨 By using a light and a dark shade can give the illusion of dimension.
We see the ‘bright’ tones first, and the ‘dark’ tones last, which has an impact of our perception of what we see.
☝🏻Next time your client asks for dimension, ask her (or him) the questions above and look at inspo pictures that reflect what they like. It’s always great to have a visual!

This is a perfect example of a maintenance appointment.. It looks like there’s a lot going on doesn’t there? 👀 and to some extent there is! Keeping on top of your colour is 🗝
For this top up I’ve applied roots first, as they needed the longest amount of time (we can talk about that another day) & then to brighten up some ‘grow out’ I’ve added lightener and a beaut of a toner! Doesn’t she look amazing!!🖤
