“In 2011, I began photographing the lives of young people from the Lumbee Tribe in and around Pembroke, North Carolina, which is the tribal seat of the Lumbee, who for decades were the largest federally unrecognised tribe in the United States, with more than 55,000 enrolled members. The Lumbee’s struggle for recognition is a defining story of American identity itself. Who gets to claim heritage? Who controls the narrative of race and culture? And how do systems of political and economic power shape those narratives? You Don’t Look Native to Me challenges preconceptions and to show Native identity not as fixed, but as evolving, redefining itself with each generation. Maria Sturm is a Romanian photographer based in Berlin whose work explores identity, memory, belonging, and the stories we inherit and create. Moving between personal and collective narratives, her projects span continents and communities, always guided by a deep curiosity about what shapes us as individuals and societies.
A Fulbright and DAAD Scholar, her work has been exhibited internationally and featured in publications such as The Guardian, CNN, and i-D Magazine.

Με μεγάλη χαρά καλωσορίζουμε τη Maria Sturm στο Polichnitos Cultural Festival Lesvos 2026.
Η Maria Sturm είναι φωτογράφος με καταγωγή από τη Ρουμανία και έδρα το Βερολίνο. Το έργο της εξερευνά την ταυτότητα, τη μνήμη, το αίσθημα του ανήκειν και τις ιστορίες που κληρονομούμε και δημιουργούμε. Μέσα από προσωπικές και συλλογικές αφηγήσεις, η δουλειά της ταξιδεύει ανάμεσα σε διαφορετικές κοινότητες και τόπους, αναζητώντας όσα μας συνδέουν ως ανθρώπους.
Υπότροφος των προγραμμάτων Fulbright και DAAD, έχει παρουσιάσει το έργο της διεθνώς, ενώ η δουλειά της έχει αναγνωριστεί από μέσα όπως το The Guardian, το CNN και το i-D Magazine.

Mettendo in crisi il concetto stesso di identità, la mostra rappresenta l’opportunità di ragionare sugli stereotipi e sulla necessità di rinegoziare, grazie a uno sguardo altro, le percezioni che inconsapevolmente ci portano a leggere il mondo in un’ottica di chiusura anziché di apertura. Le immagini, i video e i contributi audio presenti in mostra raccontano come le storie, gli stereotipi e le lotte per il riconoscimento abbiano plasmato — e continuino a plasmare — le vite della Tribù Lumbee a Pembroke, North Carolina.
l titolo del progetto, You Don’t Look Native to Me, è una frase dolorosamente familiare per il popolo Lumbee, che ben racchiude il divario tra percezione interna - come si vedono i nativi - ed esterna - cioè come chi non fa parte della comunità li percepisce. I protagonisti si rappresentano come individui unici con radici culturali condivise, rifiutando di conformarsi agli stereotipi su cosa significhi essere un nativo americano.
La mostra, che sarà inaugurata il 30 aprile alle 19:00, è stata resa possibile grazie al contributo del e della società cooperativa Elfo.

This year, Vivanderia Sociale is hosting, as part of the
OFF programme of, You Don't
Look Native to Me by
Challenging the very concept of identity, the exhibition offers an opportunity to reflect on stereotypes and the need to renegotiate, through an alternative perspective, the perceptions that unconsciously lead us to view the world through a lens of closure rather than openness. The images, videos and audio pieces in the exhibition recount how stories, stereotypes and struggles for recognition have shaped — and continue to shape — the lives of the Lumbee Tribe in Pembroke, North Carolina.
The title of the project, You Don’t Look
Native to Me, is a painfully familiar phrase for the Lumbee people, which aptly encapsulates the gap between internal perception – how Native Americans see themselves – and external perception – that is, how those outside the community perceive them.
How do photobooks shape the way we see identity and belonging?
In this edition of Talking Books, photographer Maria Sturm presents her photobook "You Don’t Look Native to Me" and offers insight into her long-term project portraying young Lumbee people from North Carolina. Combining photographs with interviews, her work explores questions of identity, representation, and community.
In dialogue with Graciela Iturbide’s series "White Fence", the conversation opens up perspectives on how photography can make visible both boundaries and connections within communities, and how identity continues to shift across generations.

✨ Maria Sturm war mehrere Monate in Chemnitz unterwegs und hat insgesamt 164 Menschen fotografiert, die Garagen und die Räume dazwischen nutzen. Zu sehen gibt es die Ausstellung in 50 teilnehmenden Geschäften bis zum 26. April 2025.
