Mettendo in crisi il concetto stesso di identitร , la mostra rappresenta lโopportunitร di ragionare sugli stereotipi e sulla necessitร di rinegoziare, grazie a uno sguardo altro, le percezioni che inconsapevolmente ci portano a leggere il mondo in unโottica di chiusura anzichรฉ di apertura. This year, Vivanderia Sociale is hosting, as part of the
OFF programme of, You Don't
Look Native to Me by
Challenging the very concept of identity, the exhibition offers an opportunity to reflect on stereotypes and the need to renegotiate, through an alternative perspective, the perceptions that unconsciously lead us to view the world through a lens of closure rather than openness. The images, videos and audio pieces in the exhibition recount how stories, stereotypes and struggles for recognition have shaped โ and continue to shape โ the lives of the Lumbee Tribe in Pembroke, North Carolina.
The title of the project, You Donโt Look
Native to Me, is a painfully familiar phrase for the Lumbee people, which aptly encapsulates the gap between internal perception โ how Native Americans see themselves โ and external perception โ that is, how those outside the community perceive them.
โฉ ๐๐๐ ๐ซ๐๐โ๐ ๐ณ๐๐๐ ๐ต๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐ ๐ด๐ is a project by ๐๐๐ซ๐ข๐ ๐๐ญ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ฆ (b. Romania), a Berlin-based photographer, mother and teacher. Raised between Romania, Germany and the USA, 's work explores identity, how it is perceived, assigned, and lived.
โIn 2011, I began photographing the lives of young people from the Lumbee Tribe in and around Pembroke, North Carolina. You Donโt Look Native to Me combines photographs, videos, interviews, and texts to challenge preconceptions and to show Native identity not as fixed, but as evolvingโredefining itself with each generation.
Pembroke is the tribal seat of the Lumbee, who for decades were the largest federally unrecognized tribe in the United States, with more than 55,000 enrolled members. The Lumbee have petitioned the federal government for recognition since 1888, making their case one of the longest and most contested in U.S. history.
The title refers to a phrase painfully familiar to the Lumbee, encapsulating the dissonance between how they see themselves and how they are perceived by others. The paradox of othernessโbeing simultaneously visible and deniedโlies at the core of this work.
In December 2025, after more than a century of legal and political struggle, the United States formally recognized the Lumbee Tribe, making them the 575th federally recognized tribe. This recognition does not automatically place Indigenous issues at the center of national discourse. Instead, it creates a rare and fragile opening.
Who gets to claim heritage? Who controls the narrative of race and culture? And how do systems of political and economic power shape those narratives?โ

For her exhibition, Maria Sturm initiates an extraordinary gathering: in 2024, the Romanian-born photographer portrayed more than 170 individuals while moving through Chemnitzโs sprawling garage landscapes.
Her portraits show people who are at ease in their surroundings, radiating a quiet sense of confidence. Between self-perception and external gaze, quiet yet powerful image spaces unfoldโrevealing not only individuals and their environments, but also landscapes, rituals, and material traces of East German identity.
A collective portrait of Chemnitz emerges: a city seen through its people, its spaces, and the informal networks that quietly hold it together.
