Intuitively I painted the second panel. Gold concealing the blue. Like a space between presence and absence. By later adding also subtle traces of gold to the original panel, I felt both parts slowly started to resonate with one another.
In Echoes of Silence I explore how silence is never emptiness, but an active space where memory, longing and perception continue to move beneath the surface.

While making this piece, my thoughts kept going back to the paradox that opposites need each other. Stillness gains meaning through movement. Light becomes visible through darkness. A horizon divides the image while holding it together at the same time. Maybe that is also why I work in layers. Because nothing is ever just one thing. Water reflects memories, air creates space, and somewhere where the two meets, you find silence.
That is als why I worked with plant-based acrylic paint on an analogue collage of 10gsm washi on linen.
Something fragile meeting something strong. Thinnest of paper slowly finding its place on a solid surface.

This diptych from Echoes of Silence began in Death Valley, where I photographed a landscape that carries a deep stillness within it.
This series comes from my connection to the natural world and from seeing how quietly landscapes can change over time. Places that once felt endless now feel more vulnerable and precious.

This is why water keeps returning in my work — and also now with this blue. A colour that feels cool, even distant, and yet somehow brings stillness. Rest.
Yves Klein once said that blue is the most abstract of colours — rarely present in nature except in infinite spaces like the sky and the sea. For him, blue was the absolute, the immaterial, the infinite made visible. I think about that often.
My blue is quieter than Klein’s. Less monumental. But the intention isn’t so different — to create space. A place to pause.

This week, at, will show a first glimpse of my new series Echoes of Silence — unique works, each beginning with a photograph I made myself, printed on washi paper, layered onto linen, and painted over with plant-based acrylic paint.
I won’t pretend it doesn’t feel vulnerable to show something this new. But I’m excited. And I hope you’ll come and see it.
Later this year, the full series will be presented in a solo exhibition at Bildhalle Amsterdam in September.

What I keep returning to is art. Research has shown that living with art — and making it — can genuinely support our wellbeing, reducing stress and restoring a sense of balance. I feel that deeply in my own practice.
For me, the act of making is essential. I sometimes need to withdraw from the outside world and return to the studio — a quiet cocoon where I can think, feel, and work without urgency. This piece emerged from that need for stillness.
