By the early 1960s, the Salk vaccine had pulled off the remarkable — virtually eliminating polio in Canada.

We could have taken a victory lap. Instead, we asked, what's next?

People with disabilities had almost no support and few places to turn for knowledge and community. We answered the call for rehabilitation, vocational training, assistive devices, employment support, and more. Working alongside people with disabilities, we delivered services and resources that increased independence and community participation.

Evolution has always been part of our story. We work alongside people with disabilities, families, and caregivers to advance our common goals.

Yesterday, today, and tomorrow — we’re getting bigger together.

Meet our Community Support Leader Jalyssa Currie!

Before she started her career journey at March of Dimes Canada, Jalyssa worked in the hospitality industry, unsure of where to go next. While she didn’t go to school in her current field, her motivation to positively impact the lives of people with disabilities was a huge asset. “I came to this work fresh, and they really prepared me. I’ve had opportunities to take part in training and courses that allow me to continue learning on the job.”

Promoted into her current role not long after she joined, Jalyssa has enjoyed being an important part of the Community Support Services team ever since. “I was thrilled to advance my career in such a short period of time, there’s just so much opportunity here!”

Global Accessibility Awareness Day is about creating more inclusive digital spaces and making sure accessibility is part of how we design, communicate, create, and connect.

Our friends at, Daniel O’Connor and Bradley Heaven, are incredible champions of this way of thinking. Through their social channels, they share insights and experiences with adaptive products and assistive technologies that support accessibility, communication, and independence for people with disabilities. Their content helps people stay connected, informed, and empowered.

Recently they’ve launched RUN: The Making of a Graphic Novel—a limited edition that takes you behind the scenes of their friendship, first marathon run and the making of their graphic novel.

We’re excited to be part of this endeavour, and if you’ve been looking for projects that bring more authentic disability stories and perspectives into the spotlight, we encourage you to check it out and support the Kickstarter if you’re able to before June 5:

Today, as we recognize Personal Support Workers and frontline healthcare workers across the country, we’re celebrating Donna, a dedicated team member who has been supporting clients at MODC for 30 years.

Donna joined MODC in 1996 after being referred by a client’s family member and has been making a difference ever since. Over the years, she has supported people through every stage of life and care journeys, building trusted relationships rooted in patience, professionalism, and compassion.

When asked why she has stayed with MODC for so long, Donna shared: “I have stayed with MODC this long because I love providing service with people. I get up every day knowing people are looking forward to seeing me and I am looking forward to seeing them. It’s the best feeling and I feel so blessed.”

Thank you, Donna, and thank you to all frontline workers whose care, empathy, and dedication continue to make a difference every single day.
