Imagine this sitting on the desk of a 17th-century scholar. This Kangxi brushpot (circa 1690) features Kui Xing, the acolyte to the God of Literature. Despite his “ugly” appearance, he is one of the most auspicious figures in Chinese art, symbolizing the moment a student achieves success in the grueling civil service exams.
The technical mastery here is superb:
• The Palette: Vibrant underglaze blue and difficult-to-fire copper-red.
• The Texture: Figures are painted on slightly raised white slip against a serene celadon ground.
• The Legacy: Formerly in the renowned Marsh Collection and published as a prime example of “Art for the Literati.”
A rare survivor that captures the intersection of faith, hard work, and artistic brilliance. #chineseart #Kangxi #scholarly #ChineseAntiques #Literati

This rare wucai cylindrical charcoal burner (香炉), dating to the Tianqi–Chongzhen period, c. 1630, unfolds like a handscroll in fired enamel. A scholar sits in quiet contemplation, wine cup poised, one hand resting upon a book—an image of learned ease and refined withdrawal. On the reverse, an attendant approaches with a goose, a subtle emblem of ritual propriety and seasonal abundance.
Painted in luminous turquoise, yellow, green, and aubergine, and animated with iron-red accents, the scene is framed by double keyfret borders and auspicious motifs in underglaze blue. Beneath the vessel, the four-character mark 「天下太平」— “Peace and prosperity under heaven” speaks to the hopes of a world poised on the edge of dynastic change.
Once held in a private Japanese collection and sold by Zenta-Shoundo, Kyoto, this charcoal burner embodies the late-Ming literati ideal: harmony, scholarship, and the quiet poetry of daily life.
