Far away from corporate offices, we envisage workspaces that are very open to their surroundings, generous in their use of natural light whilst being protected from heat and sunlight: the architecture we propose here is more like domestic architecture, where interior and exteriors are almost intertwined, offering porous spaces deeply imbued with the landscape they overlook.
The large terraces that run along and border each facade is inhabited and encourage one to open the windows and work literally between indoor and outdoor.
They are furnished with large terracotta jars, typical of the region and produced by a local company. These jars historically featured in the inner courtyard of all the Montpellier’s grand mansions. And they confer a particularly authentic and almost luxurious atmosphere upon the space, thru the spaciousness of these outdoor areas and the quality of their scenery.
The project’s site, clearly visible from one of the train stations main exit, calls for careful consideration of its symbolism: What kind of gateway do we wish to offer to the city of Montpellier, and what story do we want to tell about this rapidly growing city, which is committed both to its quality of life and to protecting its unique environment?
With this project, we aim to embody a distinctively Mediterranean quality of life.

What happens when architecture exceed its functional mandate? My lecture will investigate how my practice deliberately position itself within the realm of art.
I will focus on several built projects and design processes, and show how I like to integrate artistic thinking into our work: through abstraction, material experimentation and the construction of spatial narrative.
Rather than opposing utility and expression, I think that function can coexist with -and even amplify- artistic intend.
Our projects aim to be defined by their capacity to operate simultaneously as infrastructure and a cultural artifact, and challenge conventional definitions of both disciplines.

My artwork is a refuge in the village of Bessuejouls, along the GR65.
I conceived it like a roof reaching for the sky, enveloping you and projecting you towards the stars. It will be draped in schist slates from the nearby quarries, and placed on a bed of dry stones assembled to create a Belvedere overlooking the valley.
In the lower part, the schist is flamboyant, almost orange; it comes from the earth. And then, the higher you climb, the more refined it becomes, turning black and then bluish at the very top, as if it were melting towards the sky and being reflected in it.
I’m so grateful for the huge work all the craftsmen did, especially Sebastien (for the Belvedere covered with dry stones, and Olivier for the amazing roof of schist slates). 🙏

An evening contemplating the weight of place with at.
Through projects from her native France to Australia and finally, Albania, Gautrand reflected on how architecture begins with place, both what we see around a building and what a building creates around it. Place as memory, climate, density, craft, and daily life. Place as something fragile, layered, and constantly renegotiated. In cities like Tirana, still open to transformation, she saw opportunities that older capitals, such as Paris, constrained by overdensification, often struggle to find. Here, the architect’s role is to navigate complexity and bridge chaos with order, accepting that design is often sparked by a touch of uncertainty.
Across projects of many scales, the envelope emerged not as decoration but as an active instrument, negotiating light, climate, identity, and public space. Gautrand spoke about the courage to go beyond the brief, to question constraints, and sometimes to be gently disobedient in order to propose better alternatives. This meant preserving memory while refurbishing, compensating densification with public generosity, supporting fragile local crafts, and grounding innovation in Mediterranean realities. She also reminded us that creation carries its own fragility and vulnerability, and that respecting this condition is part of building responsibly and with care.
Her reflections were both inspiring and demanding, empowering young architects while reminding established ones of their responsibility to create opportunities and restore pride in place. Architecture, she suggested, carries both vulnerability and strength, shaped by curiosity, passion, humility, and attention to context.

Known for her strong architectural language and her bold exploration of façade, geometry, and color, Gautrand’s work moves between precision and expression, structure and light, discipline and freedom. Her buildings often act as thresholds, mediating between city and interior, public and private, permanence and change.
