We’ve been using Leatherman tools for many years, so getting the chance to visit the factory in Portland was pretty special!
And the story behind it is very nice too. Back in 1975, Tim Leatherman was travelling through Europe in a not-so-reliable Fiat, wishing he had a good pair of pliers. That little problem sparked the idea for the very first Leatherman.
Seeing the factory was impressive. Everything was so organized and it was amazing to see how all the different parts come together. And seeing the tool we use pretty much every single day actually being made right there was just really cool!
It was a real honor to get this behind the scenes look at the brand that has been such a big part of our adventures over the years ❤️

Every year we like to introduce ourselves to all the new faces that have joined us here, so here we go! 😊
We are a Dutch family of four, and since 2019 we've been traveling in our truck, Manfred. In total, we've spent over three years living on the road fulltime.
Before we left, Michael ran his own truck trading company, a family business started by his grandfather in 1974. He literally grew up surrounded by trucks, so it's probably no surprise that we ended up in one 😉
Fleur worked as a psychologist and also spent nearly five years working as a scientific researcher in epidemiology (she was that eternal student who completed two bachelor's and two master's 🙃).
The dream of long term travel started over ten years ago. Before having kids, we traveled a lot around the world and knew we wanted to do it again one day. So we started preparing. Most of that time was spent finding the right vehicle and transforming it into a home on wheels (the living unit was built by, heroes!).
We sold our house, Mike sold his business, and Fleur left her job. Everything was ready for a big adventure through Canada, Alaska, and the Lower 48. Then, just a few weeks before departure, our flights and the vessel were canceled due to COVID.
Instead, we spent two years exploring Europe, visiting 22 countries. One of our greatest joys has been watching the kids explore the world, connect with nature, and spend hours happily playing with nothing more than a stick and a stone. It was nothing but a true family bonding experience and we are so grateful for all the precious time we got to spend with our kids and each other.
In 2022, we bought a house again near Leiden, The Netherlands, and the kids started school. But the dream never really disappeared. We still wanted to make the trip to North America we had planned for so many years. So in 2023, we finally did.
It was an unforgettable year filled with memories that will stay with us for the rest of our lives.
After returning home, the kids went back to school, but before long we felt that familiar pull of adventure again.
