In the Netherlands, they don’t make exams a big deal. No one prepares for it, most people don’t attend tuition (it is even frowned upon here) and children are not graded just based on their results but also their attitude and aptitude in class.
I see how much effort parents and kids in Singapore put in their academic exam preparation and it does make me feel guilty. I question if I’m doing enough. However, I’ve come to appreciate the Dutch way. Kids are truly interested in learning here. The learning process is not ruined by rote learning or exam pressure. They are also more independent and inquisitive. They don’t regurgitate spoon fed information. They problem solve and think for themselves. They are confident and take charge of their own responsibilities in learning.
What a privilege it is to raise my kids here in NL, be able to step back, see the bigger picture and change the way we learn/ teach. Sometimes, less is more.

I then reminded myself why I started Mandarin Tree. It was really for my kids. For them to learn Mandarin in a fun & effective way, together with other children. It would defeat the whole purpose without him there.
Fast forward to today, he has wonderful retention with character recognition. Sometimes he surprises me with what he can remember, even after a long break (eg.vacation). I think we are making good progress given the fact that he has 3 languages to deal with.
Here is what I did:
❤️I didn’t give up. I continued speaking in Mandarin to him (on top of English). One day, he responded back in Mandarin! Persistence is key!
❤️I didn’t force him to write characters. The last thing I wanted was to make the learning experience unpleasant for him. His pen grip was also not strong enough for precise and complex character writing. We focused on reading instead.
❤️To make writing characters more appealing, we wrote on sand, colourful rice, condensation, shaving foam, magic calligraphy mats etc.
❤️I told him stories associated with each character’s strokes so it makes it fun and effortless to remember them!
❤️I set aside a dedicated time once a week for Chinese class with me. It could be in a park, the sand dunes or anywhere else (depending on weather).
❤️We played games in Mandarin (unrelated to Chinese character learning) so he associates Chinese learning with fun.
❤️I played Chinese songs in the car/during mealtimes/play time, read the kids Chinese books every night, let them watch mandarin cartoons so we are surrounded by Mandarin even though we live in the Netherlands.
If you are struggling, please don’t give up. I know that Chinese learning is not a walk in the park. It takes SO MUCH patience and endurance to keep this going but know that I am here to cheer you guys on!

I never thought that 3 years later, I would be a teacher to hundreds of students from all over the world. I never thought my life would be interesting enough to be in a documentary.
I still don’t think it is but I hope it means I am doing something right with my teaching.

Even though living abroad is not easy and I still have my struggles today, I’ve stepped way out of my comfort zone and grown as a person, in ways I would not have been able to if I stayed in Singapore.
It is easy to dwell on negative aspects but I think it’s all down to a positive mindset (and sufficient vitamin D intake🤣 )
🍜 I missed authentic Chinese food- so I started learning to make them (radish cake, chicken rice, bao zi, herbal soups, rice dumplings, kway chap, chwee kueh etc)
🧧No one else is celebrating my culture and tradition here- so I created my own ambiance at home and organised parties for my community to share the culture.
👩🏫My kids don’t have access to good Chinese schools here- so I started Mandarin Tree Chinese School to not only teach them to read and write Chinese but also love Chinese learning!
🇸🇬My kids got teased in school for looking different- so I started introducing Chinese culture to my children’s class and involving them in Chinese celebrations. Education is the answer to everything. It made me aware of the privilege I had being in Singapore and how we should be sensitive to minority groups.
🗣I couldn’t understand Dutch- so I went to night school and learnt a new language! My level is very basic but it’s enough to get by. I hope to take more classes soon!
🧹We don’t have a helper here like most people do in Singapore- so I involve my children in a lot of chores and watch them be independent (even though they complain a lot🤣. It’ll do them good!)
🇳🇱I couldn’t identify with Dutch culture- so I embraced them and made sure my kids don’t miss out on anything just because their parents are not Dutch. We celebrate Sinterklaas, St Maarten etc.
🚗We didn’t own a car- so I learnt to ride a bike with my then 7 month old sitting in front. Mind you, these Dutch bikes are all so high, my feet couldn’t touch the ground. It was scary. Now I fly around on my cargo bike for school pickups and groceries.
I just want to say, you’re not alone. I understand your struggles and I am here to help! know a lot of our followers are away from home. Where did you move from and where are you based now?❤️
