In our time, there was hardly a single class where Guruji was not sitting with the harmonium, playing the nagma, explaining the structure of the taal, making us recite compositions, or even teaching us how the nagma works. That constant exposure developed our understanding of laya, musicality, and the relationship between movement and rhythm.
Today, I meet students who have been learning for 6–7 years, and when I ask them a very basic question — “Do you recognize a nagma?” or “Do you understand what a nagma is?” — the answer I often hear is, “What is nagma?”
And honestly, that answer is painful.
How can someone learn Kathak without understanding the music that carries it? How can a dancer become independent if they always need someone to do padant, count matras, or guide them to sam?
Somewhere, the focus has shifted too much towards fast choreographies, reel culture, instant stage exposure, and competitions the moment a child enters an institute. But traditional training was never built on speed. It was built on time, patience, listening, repetition, and depth.
Kathak is not only about performing. It is about understanding.
And if neither the teacher nor the student has the patience required for that traditional process, then one must genuinely question whether they want to pursue this art seriously or just consume it quickly.
Because an art form survives not through trends, but through depth of training.

Our students got the opportunity to explore the beauty of Carnatic music, understand the connection and similarities between Carnatic and Hindustani classical music, and learn about concepts like thaalam and raagam in a deeply engaging way.
It was wonderful to see the students interact, ask questions, listen, observe, and experience something beyond their regular Kathak training. Sessions like these open new doors of understanding and remind us how interconnected our artistic traditions truly are.
