A RajMan presentation
Hearing the Fingers is a theatrical play based on the life of deaf artist Amit Vardhan, directed by Manan Kathuria. The play was performed at Travancore Palace, Delhi, on 2nd March 2025.

In the making.
I opened the windows and let the breeze enter inside, and the sunlight slowly sneaked through the curtains. The studio looked as beautiful as ever. I sat at my desk; an old camera looked at me, reminding me of my journey through the years. It’s been ten years, a decade of me photographing.
It is a blessing to be chosen. A craft that documents time, memory, people, places, colours, and textures. It immortalises the living and the non-living, and I’m grateful I was gifted a camera early in my life.
It has been a rollercoaster. It has shaped me into who I am today. The shutter is too sensitive, so am I. Out of thousands of photos, it was super difficult to choose 10 photographs for the limited edition print sale. Every photo I’ve ever clicked has brought me supreme happiness. It feels like I’ve imbibed this art form. It walks, talks, and goes everywhere with me.
I see the world through a colour that is mine. I see dreams of a seller. I see the storyteller. I look here, look there. All of it is extremely beautiful. The paper, ufff, what do I tell you. I think when you do something with all your heart, life tends to give you more than you can imagine. To dreams and little MK, you’ve come long way.
Today, as I sit and go through these 10 photographs, my heart cannot wait for them to be adorned, collected and archived by you all.

18 January. This day, you left the world. It’s been 67 years, but I wish to tell you that you live in the hearts of many. You’ve left a treasure for people who find you in your afsanay, afsanche, mazmoons, khats and qisses. It’s been 4 years to our friendship, Manto saab. A long long time ago, we met at Dilli’s Big Book Bazaar and see, we have come so far.
Look, I see a reflection of you in me, Manto saab. Is that Kurta the right way? The spectacles too. Sorry couldn’t get Cavanders, and you know I don’t smoke. I’m just posing. Also, I’m on a hunt to find that specific bottle of alcohol. I’m sure about the jutti though. But before we go on stage together this year, I know all of it will align.
I managed to get a watch from Nanu’s collection, which is from the time of partition. Who knows it better than you about the time that shook people, scattered families, disheartened many, left a void. That notebook of mine is full of our conversations. It’s one sided but I know what you’ll reply.
I will visit Bombay soon too. I can’t wait to see where you lived. Adelphi Chambers, Clare Road, Byculla, Sarvi. I wish to visit that before we do a theatrical play in Dilli. ‘Hum jeb katre hain Manto saab, jo apni jeb khud kaat te hain, aur ek kahani nikal ke bahar aajati hai.’

But, I’m still dreaming. It’s been 5 days now. 29 July 2022, a dream turned into a reality. A day which felt like so many years. A dream we once saw sitting in front of the mighty mountains, RajMan, a dream of my dad and mine, took a flight on that stage. A stage where I always aspired to be. A stage I craved for. A story I wanted to tell since so many years. A day of letting it out, venting it out, in happy tears, smiles and laughter.
A family that got together to celebrate Art and the artist in them. A family that cried together, that lived those three hours of their lives together, that supported each other, that inspired each other.
I owe it to everybody who was there. My pillars of strength, my guiding lights, Jai bhai and Abhinav. I’m blessed to have you both. I’m indebted to Qaisiyat and each and everyone who helped me, stood beside me to bring this to life. Amit Ji, the day I met you, I knew this universe is conspiring something. And we did it. You art inspires me. Your life journey inspires me.
