“PFOA-free.”
“Non-stick”.
“Easy clean.”

$6. Sounds like a win, right? 😅

Let’s break down what that label is actually hiding:

— PFOA was phased out around 2014.
The replacement? PTFE. AKA Teflon. AKA still PFAS.

— “PFOA-free” tells you what’s NOT in the pan.
It says nothing about what IS.

— Slick black coating. Speckled finish. “Non-stick, easy clean.” That’s Teflon’s exact playbook. There is no world where this $6 pan is coated in some mystery safe material.

— PFAS are forever chemicals. Linked to thyroid disease, hormone disruption, reduced fertility, immune suppression, and kidney, testicular and thyroid cancers.

— One scratch on a non-stick coating = up to 9,000 microplastic particles in your food.
A worn pan = over 2 million per cook.

— The black plastic egg flip they’ve bundled in? 🫣 Leaches flame retardants and endocrine disruptors the second it hits a hot pan.

— Heat + fat + scratching plastic on plastic = the exact recipe for chemical migration straight into your kids’ eggs.

Swap to:
👉 Stainless steel. Cast iron. Carbon steel.
👉Utensils: wood, stainless, or food-grade silicone.

Bin the black plastic and the cheap nasty pans (even though they are cute 😅).

And Ps: this is one of my FAV reasons to use lower tox options with our babes and I know thousands and thousands of households doing it ❤️ Empowered mums with big wide tool kits to raise their babies is the type of motherhood I want to support every day.
I let my son skip school today. Because respecting your kid means listening when their body says slow down 🔥

He rated his sickness a “thousand out of ten” this morning. 😂 He’s not that sick. A bit sniffly. A bit tired. Could’ve gone to school.

I kept him home anyway🫶

Because somewhere along the way, we decided kids have to be visibly, violently ill to “earn” a day of rest. Anything less and we push them through. Pack the lunchbox. Drop them at the gate. Hope for the best.

But kids aren’t mini adults. Their nervous systems are still developing. Their immune systems are still learning. And when we override their “I’m tired” signal over and over again, we’re not raising resilient kids we’re raising kids who don’t trust their own bodies.

Here’s what I know: rest BEFORE the crash beats recovery AFTER the crash. Every. Single. Time.

Chronic low-grade stress (yes, school counts) suppresses immune function and elevates cortisol. That’s exactly what tips a “bit run down” into full-blown sick by Friday. One slow day at home baking, resting, cuddles often prevents 3 days off later in the week.

But honestly? Even without the science. Your kid is allowed to be tired. They’re allowed to have a slow day. They’re allowed to not want to be slammed into a loud, stimulating environment every single day of their lives.

We listen to their bodies now, or we teach them to override their bodies forever.

I know which one I’m choosing. 🤍
What did I miss? 🥶
This is just a fact of my life.
There’s a movement happening right now telling mothers to stop reading the labels, stop questioning the policies, stop researching the ingredients and “just live”.

And I get it. Fear is exhausting. Spiralling is exhausting. Doom scrolling toxin content at 10pm is exhausting.

But the answer isn’t to stop knowing.

The answer is to learn how to hold the information without it owning you 🔥

Nuance is the job. Both things at once. That’s the work. 👊

When I first started learning about toxins in everyday products…I went down a bit of a rabbit hole 😂🥶

Not because I wanted to be “perfect” but because I realised how many small daily exposures kids have in their environment.

Things they sleep on.
Things they eat from.
The air they breathe.
The water they drink.
The products touching their skin every day.

Kids absorb more toxins per kilogram of body weight than adults, and their detox systems are still developing.

Which is why over the years I’ve slowly made simple swaps at home that reduce toxic load without making life complicated.

In this post I’m sharing some of the biggest ones that made a difference for us.

Not perfection. Just better choices where and WHEN we can.

Yesterday I shared some supermarket snack options as I walked through and talked about what I’d pair them with to balance a lunchbox. So many of you asked for my overall recommendations.

But this part matters 👇🏼

Snacks are not standalone meals, even the “better” ones. They’re designed to accompany other food in a balanced lunchbox. Pairing is everything.

Protein. Fat. Fibre. ✅
That’s what keeps kids steady, focused and not starving at 10:15am.

That said having packaged snack options isn’t all bad. They can be helpful, mix things up, and make space for fresh, homemade whole foods alongside them (and let’s face it the kiddos do love them!) 🙃.

Yes, these brands will be more expensive. Cleaner ingredients usually are however here’s how I make it work in real life:

– I buy on special as much as possible
– I buy bulk when and where I can
– I split packs across lunchboxes (I’ve mastered this with 3 kids)
– I cut bars in half or thirds
– I use them as add-ons, not the main event 🙏👏

Sometimes half a bar + fresh fruit and veg + cheese and a beef stick + leftovers in a thermos is the move. When I buy them, I invest in them as they’re the smallest percentage of the lunchbox.

If I keep the main lunch simple (leftovers, sourdough, thermos meals, rice, tuna, eggs etc), I can justify investing in better packaged snacks most weeks and slowly build a little rotation.

And this is just one part of the bigger picture. Over the next few weeks I’m sharing:

• Fresh food lunchbox go-tos
• Thermos / warm meal ideas
• Homemade snack ideas
• Full lunch builds
• How to pair snacks properly so they actually fuel your kids

This isn’t about perfection, it’s about upgrading where you can and building lunchboxes that work for real kids with real appetites.

I love these brands - do you have a favourite here?
Or in general?
Paracetamol is still routinely handed to pregnant women with virtually no warning of risks — often on the reassurance that “it’s safe.” Yet the research is telling another story.

🔸 A European meta-analysis of 73,000+ mother–child pairs (Alemany et al., 2021) found that children prenatally exposed were around 20% more likely to develop ADHD or autism spectrum symptoms.
🔸 An NIH-funded biomarker study (Wang et al., 2019) revealed that babies with the highest cord blood acetaminophen levels had a 2–3× higher risk of ADHD and autism compared to those with the lowest levels.
🔸 A scientific consensus statement (Bauer et al., 2021) concluded that evidence has now accumulated enough to call for precautionary action regarding paracetamol in pregnancy.

This is an injustice: women are not told that safer, natural approaches can often be tried first in many general circumstances. We are not warned that the “safety” label rests on outdated assumptions. Instead, we’re handed a box of pills.

Informed consent should be the baseline in pregnancy care. But too often it isn’t. How can mothers make empowered choices if the information is withheld — or worse, if they’re gas-lit when they question safety?

✨ Informed mothers are the linchpin for a changed and empowered society. When we know better, we do better — and it’s time these conversations, and the research behind them, became mainstream.
