Remembering when brought the alchemy of indigo to our walls. Her process is a slow, quiet conversation with nature, a transformation. For Malatalia, itโ€™s about the patience. Itโ€™s a craft rooted in her own heritage, from her grandfatherโ€™s origins in China to the meticulous mastery of Japanese textile traditions. Her work speaks of migration, of searching for home, and of finding clarity within the rhythm of the natural world.

a lot of people donโ€™t realise that indigo dye isnโ€™t actually blue. Yes, the indigo pigment is blue, but once mixed with water, a reducer and a base (the essentials to making an indigo vat), it dissolves and turns green.

Itโ€™s only when the dyed material meets oxygen that the transformation happens, shifting from green to that deep, iconic blue.

In Santiago Niltepec, Oaxaca, where indigo is still produced, freshly harvested Indigofera suffruticosa is submerged in large vats of water and left to ferment for about 15 hours. As they steep, they release their pigment, indican, turning the water a vibrant turquoise.

The liquid is then oxygenated, by agitating the blue water with large poles for several hours. This process transforms the indican into indoxyl, which eventually becomes insoluble indigo pigment, the same rich blue we use in our dye vats.
At the end of February, we had the honour of hosting three stitched shibori workshops taught by ๐Ÿฉต It was beautiful to learn from her and to experience the patience and repetition required in shibori. Itโ€™s incredible the endless possibilities of patterns and designs that can be created simply by manipulating fabric through pleating, folding, sewing, and tying.

Seeing everyoneโ€™s results and excitement throughout the process was truly heartwarming. I think itโ€™s fair to say we all canโ€™t wait for Makiko-san to return to Mexico to teach more! ใฉใ‚‚ใ‚ใ‚ŠใŒใจใ†ใ”ใ–ใ„ใพใ™๏ผ(^_^)

In the meantime, Iโ€™m looking forward to spending more time with Makiko-san and Martin-san in Japan this coming May for our Japan tour. See you soon!

General little update ~ This year started as if I drifted into orbit, I havenโ€™t quite found a moment to be still. Incredibly grateful for the last few months and excited for the ones to come. But life is finally easing back to a softer pace. This month Iโ€™ll be working on pieces and projects that have been on hold. Thank you all for being patient ๐Ÿฉต
