Within the frame of Timisoara 2023 European Capital of Culture, the proposal NURSERY: 1,306 PLANTS FOR TIMISOARA occupies a symbolic centrality of the city and therefore aims to be read as an invitation to redefine and intensify the use of public space and its relation with greenery.
The proposal consists of an ephemeral structure hosting a tree nursery and open spaces for public activities. The installation can be seen as an open test for how public space can be used, designed, and perceived. Having in mind the ongoing urban transformation of the area, the proposal wants to open new perspectives and debates around the uses and temporalities of the city and its engagement with various communities and institutions.
Once finished its temporal life-cycle, after hosting them, the intervention will provide new trees and plants to be planted around the City—according to the citizens’ demands for new green spaces, following a 100% reuse logic. Beyond understanding the proposal as a symbolic milestone, the project aims to host and boost activities around or within it where the natural and the domestic merge.

RESEARCH IN RESIDENCE #2 at CIVA Brussels
In 1930, Louis Herman De Koninck finalized the design for an iconic kitchen system; just one year later, the brand CUBEX was registered by Établissements E.J. Van de Ven S.A., commercializing and spreading modern cooking principles throughout Belgium for decades to come. Based on a functional, 60 cm modular system, its layout promoted efficiency and hygiene, while reinforcing gendered familial roles. Architecture—and domestic spaces in particular—have historically contributed to promoting and perpetuating biased social models around care practices.
Unworlding CUBEX critically revisits the original design, imagining new forms of kinship and domestic labor. Using abstract prototypes, MAIO proposes a recomposition of the linear CUBEX modules into a multidirectional kitchen. In other words: a shift from the normative housewife laboratory to an open space that acknowledges a multiplicity of bodies and their interdependencies. Some plug-in prototypes allow users to transgress the single- occupancy character of the CUBEX kitchen, imagining complex configurations for collective care. Others turn the private kitchen into public infrastructure, seek to dismantle normative attitudes toward ableism and gender, or create possibilities for multiple usages, beyond cooking.

The housing block is formed by a very narrow volume, with a 7.5-meter bay, and two protruding bodies –7 and 8 story-height respectively-, strategically disposed to keep the views of the existing rear building. The building ground floor merges studios with the public space allowing to keep the connection between the neighborhood behind it and the riverbank, creating open-plan urban spaces integrated with the promenade/park.
The housing block is composed of flexible and adaptable apartments, where rooms are connected through a continuous gallery space that frees the façade of the building. A serialized structural modulation allows the aggregation of spaces of similar dimensions, avoiding spatial hierarchies and allowing different typologies to emerge, from studios to duplex up to 2- or 3-bedrooms apartments.

Competition
In the last years, many movements and associations have emerged claiming for a reorganization of caring practices, from cooperatives of care to food activists or domestic workers unions. Despite their different contexts and realities, many of these different agents use communal kitchens and the act of cooking as a form of political emancipation and social empowerment and mutual support, but on many occasions, they remain invisible or disconnected from each other.
Social infrastructures and public spaces for care, such as those urban kitchens, have been extensively used by different communities and worked as complementary infrastructures to private ones. In this typology, these domestic yet communal organizations have become spaces for gathering and providing political voice to communities and agencies, going far beyond the bare act of cooking, and eating. These urban-domestic systems not only blur the established limits between private and public, between family structures and domestic roles, between labor and housekeeping, gender roles, etc., but also act as a place for neighborhood management.
The transportable prototype, Urban K-Type, presented within the frame of the exhibition Home, Sweet, Home at Milano’s Triennale, aims not only to give visibility to these existing practices and typologies, but also to invite new ones to emerge, as well as to generate a network that amplifies and connects the voices of all those already existing agents by occupying the urban space.
