Want to see a wild party trick?

Stop by our raccoon exhibit to watch them climb down trees both tail first and head first!

Climbing school will soon be in session for wild raccoon kits born in Maine this spring. It will take a lot of practice to climb as well as mom, so they start testing their confidence and skills on tree trunks and bending branches at a young age.

Explore wild Maine after dark during your next day trip to the Park! Did you know we have a nocturnal wildlife exhibit?

Let your eyes adjust, then see if you can spot one of Maine's most talented mammals- the flying squirrel!

Pop Quiz❗️ Do flying squirrels actually fly❓

The red fox usually steals the spotlight, but Maine is home to another fox too. This new Maine Wildlife Park resident is a gray fox!

Gray foxes have hints of red and white but their overall salt and pepper color gives their identity away. The dark stripe that runs down the length of their tail is another feature that helps tell the two species apart at a distance or on trail camera images.

The gray fox has a secret talent you might not expect from a member of the canid (dog) family- tree climbing. Don't forget to look up when you explore the Maine outdoors!

Our grounds look great thanks to amazing volunteers. This is what community looks like! Thank you,, and for your teamwork, generosity, and willingness to roll up your sleeves for wildlife.

Corporate and group volunteers play in important role at the Park, completing groundskeeping, light maintenance, and other tasks that help keep the park welcoming and safe for both visitors and wildlife.

Individual volunteers are also encouraged to sign up as gatehouse attendants or as Friends of Maine Wildlife Park snack shack clerks or gardeners. Follow the Volunteer link in our bio to join in the community spirit!

Staff Spotlight!

We'd like you all to meet Ben Barrett, Assistant Superintendent of Maine Wildlife Park.

Ben started his career here in 2023 as a wildlife keeper. As a knowledgeable master naturalist with a calm leadership style, he quickly grew into his current role. Interested in a similar career? Ben says, get out of your comfort zone by trying new things in new places.

If you want to know more about the Park's mission, Ben's your guy. He says a common misconception is that Park staff get to snuggle or play with wildlife. Outside of medical care, his team of keepers uses a hand-off approach to reduce stress and encourage natural behaviors.

Ben's superpower is making the Park a safe and comfortable home for wildlife, and a fun and educational experience for visitors. His favorite part? Knowing that each day is full of opportunities to learn, teach, and bring animal stories home to his kiddos.

Look out for Ben's friendly smile and wave during your next visit, and feel free to say hello!
