Oh Fledi-Carlito, don’t be scared. Everything will be fine. I mean no harm. 🥺

When poor dehydrated Fledi-Carlito arrived, he wasn’t quite sure what to think of me. Friend? Threat? Weird giant with snacks?

So he played dead.

But if you look closely, you can see the tiny little breaths he takes. Quite the dramatic performance. 😅

Bats are not attacking creatures. When they are scared, they usually try to crawl backwards, hide, or in extreme cases, play dead. And when they are in torpor while resting – meaning they lower their body temperature and metabolism to save energy – they cannot move fast anyway.
So attacking is really not on their mind.

Isn’t he a brilliant little actor?

No worries: I gained his trust. He is much more relaxed now and almost waits for his meals. He is an older bat and needs soft food, so I gently offer it to him until he is strong enough again.

Sooooo sweet. 🥹❤️
You can hear the baby's heartbeat and see it moving. I still can’t believe I was able to capture this moment.

Nora arrived the day before yesterday. She was found by two wonderful women who didn’t hesitate, searched for help, brought her straight to me and supported my rehab 🤗 thank you so much!

She is in good condition overall, but she has an injured wrist that currently keeps her from flying properly. And on top of that, she is heavily pregnant – very close to giving birth. 🥹

So for now, Nora gets an unlimited food supply, extra gentle handling and a little bonding work. Because she will most likely give birth here, she needs to feel as safe as possible. She also needs to tolerate daily checks, so I can make sure both she and her little one are okay.

I truly hope everything goes well. With wild bats in care, births are never something to take for granted. It often does not work out, and if it does, it feels like a small miracle.✨

Maybe having the other females in care around her will help her feel calm and safe. For now, I am doing everything I can - gently, quietly, and with a lot of hope.

Farewell, Zippel ❤️

When he was found, he was lying on a pathway, injured on his forearm, underweight and dehydrated. Luckily, the people who found him did the right thing and called for help. And thanks to my wonderful colleague, who took care of his first aid and stabilization, Zippel got the chance he needed. 🤗

He recovered quite quickly, and his wound healed without any problems. But by then it was far too cold to release him again. We had winter nights with temperatures below -10°C, so Zippel had to stay a little longer but he was in good company 💕

And maybe that was for the best. For a short while, his left elbow and knee lost pigmentation, but now everything looks fine again and tonight he is finally back where he belongs, soaring through the night sky. At my place, he was a fierce little flyer, doing the most amazing mid-air stunts. 😃

All the best, little mystery mix of soprano and common pipistrelle. One wing showed the pattern of a soprano pipistrelle, the other one more like a common pipistrelle. Nature really had fun with you. 🤭

I wish you plenty of insects whenever you are hungry, little one. Fly wild and stay safe.

Farewell, Hannah. 🥹🦇

I wish you all the best for the upcoming birth, safe nights, and plenty of yummy insects whenever you are hungry.

Normally, I release bats together with the finders, but this time our schedules didn’t quite match. And because I don’t have a car, I usually arrive 30–60 minutes early. Sometimes I really need that extra time. Even when I have chosen a suitable release spot beforehand, there can suddenly be a construction site, a road closure, a demonstration, a festival… or, in this case, an owl. 🦉😱

Owls are one of the natural predators of bats, so that spot was immediately off the list and I had to keep searching.

My goal is always to find a place where I can see as much open space as possible. I always do flight tests before release, but if a bat goes down, I need to be able to find and collect it again.

The spot was a compromise, but thankfully Hannah took off beautifully and disappeared into the night exactly as she should. 🥰

Fly safely, little one. May your baby be born under kind stars. ✨

Little Sam is back where he belongs and he was picked up by a friend. Maybe Frodo? 🥰

When Sam was found in the basement of a building, he was in a truly miserable state. But he recovered surprisingly fast and turned out to be such a calm, well-behaved and uncomplicated little patient. He even encouraged the others to practise their flying skills. 🥹

Farewell, sweetheart. I wish you all the best, plenty of insects whenever you are hungry and please, stay away from human rooms from now on. ❤️

Tiny bat, big attitude. 😅

When I rescued Hannah, she was incredibly gentle and seemed grateful for the help. Now she is doing so much better and she is showing me very clearly that she is ready to go.

That is what I mean when I say I am getting yelled at. 🤣

She has opinions about everything I do near her and honestly, that is a wonderful sign. Her weight is perfect, she is flying beautifully, and the next few days look warm and calm enough for a safe release.

So very soon, Hannah will return to nature. 🥰

Emergency first aid can change everything. Sometimes, it even feels like a little miracle. ❤️‍🩹🦇

Hannah had probably been trapped for quite a while inside the hall of a mechanical engineering company. Clever little bat that she is, she managed to make her way to the roller door, where a wonderful and very attentive woman found her lying on the ground and safely picked her up. She called the bat care hotline in Schleswig-Holstein, and because I was nearby, I was contacted and went to get Hannah.📦

When I unpacked her, I immediately saw how serious her condition was. She was severely underweight and dehydrated. Far below her minimum weight, with sunken eyes and skin stretched tightly over her tiny body. Her fur was full of metal shavings.😔

First, I stabilized her. Afterwards I carefully washed the metal particles out of her fur. During the night, I got up several times to continue her emergency care. And just eight hours later, she had already gained 2 grams — only from fluids. Her body had been so empty. And she already looked so much better. 😃

She tolerated her first tiny meals well, and now, a few days later, she is even eating all by herself. ❤️

Never underestimate what proper first aid, warmth, fluids, patience and experienced care can do.

Sometimes, it gives a little bat the chance to come back to life. 🥰

Hannah goofing around. 😂

In my opinion, Nathusius’ pipistrelles always chew as if the snack is absolutely not allowed to touch their lips.
And then Hannah topped it with...whatever this is. 😂

I had honestly never seen anything like it before. Maybe the worm touched her lip. Maybe she was being dramatic. Maybe she just wanted to make me laugh.☺️

And she did. So much!
My days are a little difficult at the moment, but a few minutes ago this tiny bat made me laugh out loud and I just had to share her with you.

Have a lovely day, and maybe even a long weekend. I hope Hannah brings you a little joy, too.

The little pip who arrived yesterday is the cutest. He's purring and loving the gentle strokes. 🥰

But he might be dealing with something serious. He's swollen near the hip, favors his left side and often holds his head at a tilt.

The vet isn't available for further diagnostics over the weekend, but I'll have him checked as soon as possible next week.

He's on pain relief and even started to purr softly. For now, all I can do is offer him rest, warmth and gentle care. He seems to enjoy the all you can eat buffet too. He immediately understood how to eat on his own. Smart little one. 🦇❤️🦇
