I had less to do that day. Nowhere urgent to be. No calls to take. A rare occurrence - almost as rare as sunshine in Holland.
"Sure," I said.
She jumped up and down with delight, and I smiled at the innocence of it all. How wonderfully simple the things are that make children happy.
We walked to our usual cafΓ©, picked up a brownie, and headed back out. As we left, I realised it had been a long time since I had seen the server there. A place that used to be part of our daily rhythm had become something that now required conscious planning.
Bano suddenly stopped and gasped.
"Mama! It's the first time this year we've had a treat together after school!"
Her surprise instantly became mine.
"Oh my goodness. You're right."
It hit me then. Ever since I started working, some of our little rituals had quietly disappeared.
Bano took a bite of her brownie and said softly, "I miss those days, Mama."
I laughed.
"Well, when I didn't have a job, you told me to get one so you could go to after-school care with your friends. Now I have a job and you miss those days?"
She laughed too because she knew it was true.
"Is it better now that I have a job?" I teased. "I do have more money. I can buy you more things."
She thought for a moment and then said:
"Well... the more money you have, the less time you have."
Wise words from my wise nine-year-old.
As we walked to the metro, we carried that thought in silence.
The more we work, the more we earn. But does that also mean we have less time left to enjoy what we earn?
What is the right balance? Where do we draw the line? How much money is enough money?
I'm glad these conversations happen in our home, and I'm glad my children are learning to ask these questions early. I hope they never fall into the trap of chasing more without leaving room to rest, connect, and enjoy the life they're working so hard to build.

When I asked about it, the waitress smiled and said, "Yes, there is weather here."
"There is a breeze here," she meant. And I accepted it without a second thought.
Later, I found myself wondering why.
When someone speaks a language that isn't their own, we extend grace. If someone speaks imperfect English to me in Europe, I understand what they're trying to say, and that's enough. I don't correct or mock. If a foreigner attempts Urdu in Pakistan and gets it all wrong, I admire the effort. Communication >> than perfection.
But that grace is not always distributed equally. Mostly, it flows from the colonised to the coloniser, and not the other way around.
For people from formerly colonised societies, speaking a European language imperfectly is often treated as a personal failure. Grammatical mistakes become judgement. An accent becomes evidence. Fluency becomes a measure of intelligence, effort, even worth.
And yet English itself is a colonial inheritance for many of us. I speak it fluently, not because it is my ancestral language, but because generations before me were forced to learn it. And yes, I speak it with an accent.
But so do the French. So do the Dutch. So do the Spanish.
Why is their accent accepted as natural, while the accents of brown/black people are often treated as something to be corrected, mocked, or overcome?
So here's a small act of decolonising the mind:
If you move to Europe from a post colonial state and don't speak the local language perfectly, stop apologising for it.
Make the effort of learning the language. But do not confuse linguistic perfection with human value.
Your accent or mistakes are not a character flaw. They're evidence that you are navigating a world across languages and cultures. Is that a deficiency? Nope. It's courage.
And the next time someone makes you feel small for not sounding native, remember:
Fluency is a part of your skill set, not it's entirity.Human dignity is not something you earn by sounding like your 'former masters'.

People often say Paris is overrated. I have never understood that sentiment. For me, there is no other place like Paris in the world.
I don't love any single monument or postcard view. It's the the way beauty is woven into the fabric of everyday life. In Paris, even the ordinary is extraordinary. You can push open the door of an apartment building and find yourself greeted by sculptures standing casually on either side, beneath carved stone facades that would be considered landmarks elsewhere. The sheer grandeur of man made wonders is what bowls me over.
The city feels theatrical in the best sense of the word. Gold sculpture catches the light. Ivory stone glows beneath grey skies. Ornate balconies, and towering façades create the impression that entire neighbourhoods were designed with beauty as their first priority. Paris is a city that understands ornament. It is unapologetically decorative.
Unapologetically extra. And I love that about it.
Then there is the Seine. Oh the views! As you cross one of its bridges on foot, the Louvre emerges into view or the MusΓ©e d'Orsay or other countless other treasures lining the riverbanks. Somewhere nearby, a musician's melody drifts across the water, transforming a simple walk into something cinematic. Romantic.
The street vendors selling macarons. The cafΓ©s spilling onto pavements, their terraces lined with woven chairs. The way people linger over coffee instead of rushing away. Here, poeple are convinced that beauty is worth preserving, worth creating, worth living alongside.
You see love for the arts everywhere. Time, labour, craftsmanship, and imagination have been poured into its streets just as much as into the masterpieces housed within its museums.
Perhaps our experience of Paris depends on what we choose to notice. As said Zachary Seager, "there is no single Paris. Paris is multiple. It can be cigarettes and unpleasant smells, grey skies and traffic jams".
But the Paris I see is magnetic and grand. No matter how many times I visit, it continues to surprise me. It continues to enchant me. And it continues to call me back. β€οΈ
